Research assistantships are a great way to boost your research profile, elevate your skill set & gather international exposure at the same time.

By cold-emailing.

Yes, cold-emails are an effective way to capture professors' and researchers' attention to work with you if they are framed the right way with a clear purpose.

First, you have to be clear why you want to do the assistantship.

Is it because you want to have a publication?
Is it because you hope to receive an LoR?
Is it because you want to extend this into a PhD?
Is it because you simply want to gain knowledge and experience in your field of interest?

Based on your reasons, you have to craft a compelling cold email. One crucial aspect of that cold email will be- HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THIS PROFESSOR'S WORK?

To prove that you're an ideal candidate, you need to show how you can contribute to the existing body of research carried out by those professors.

The best way of coming up with such possible contributions could be by proposing research insights that you have drawn by reading their publications.

For example, you may think that this paper could have led to more refined findings if the authors considered the role of factor X or Y.

Or you may say that you can work on the limitations of the papers by charting out strategy X.

To make your research directions enriching, you need to consider the following:

🔸What is the state of research & challenges in your domain in general.

🔸How does this prof's paper try to solve for those gaps & challenges.

🔸🔸🔸How can you make that work even better by exploring alternative approaches.

When your cold-emails are sprinkled with these research questions, they become almost irresistible.

You can easily find professors' email address on google scholar or by typing their full name and institute name on Google.

So many students have done amazing work remotely, thanks to the power of cold-emails. Now, they have a really competitive profile for their PhD applications. You can do it too!
