Governors Won’t Have Absolute Control of State Police — Gbajabiamila

Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, has assured Nigerians that state governors will not have absolute control over state police under the proposed policing framework being considered by the government.

Speaking on efforts to establish state police, Gbajabiamila said adequate safeguards would be put in place to prevent abuse and ensure accountability.

He noted that concerns over the possible misuse of state police by governors for political purposes are being addressed through legal and institutional mechanisms that will guarantee oversight and operational independence.

According to him, the objective of the reform is to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture by enabling states to play a greater role in policing while maintaining necessary checks and balances.

Gbajabiamila said the proposed framework is designed to ensure that state police serve the interests of citizens and communities rather than political office holders.

He added that the initiative is aimed at improving public safety, enhancing local intelligence gathering and responding more effectively to security challenges across the country.

The push for state police has gained momentum in recent months as stakeholders continue discussions on decentralising policing and improving security management at the sub-national level.
