A 4-year-old boy whose father left him, stood outside every single day for months waving at strangers... just hoping somebody would say hi back, in North Carolina.

Then one neighbor walked across the street to meet him.

Now an ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOOD shows up for his soccer games, his swim lessons, his birthday parties.

Roman Butzlaff is 4 years old, from Concord NC, just outside Charlotte.

His mom says he wakes up every single morning excited to say "hi" to somebody. It's the very first thing he wants to do.

But behind that big smile was a hurting little heart. His parents split about a year ago and his dad moved away.

Then a neighbor named Wade Fulgum did the simplest, most powerful thing in the world.

He just walked across the street... and met the little boy who was always waving at him.

And it spread.

Now about a DOZEN neighbors, people who barely knew each other's names, show up for Roman's soccer games.

His basketball games. His swimming lessons. Even his preschool open house. His birthday party guest list was basically a map of the block.

One neighbor said it best: "If the world was like this child, what an awesome, awesome place it would be."

I was thinking this morning how we’re all disciples of someone. Of some entity. Some doctrine. I was thinking how quickly you can tell these days which news networks we’re discipled by. I’m not just talking about one in particular. Take your pick. We the people have become we the parrots. No nuance. No critical thinking. No inconvenient listening. No attempts to understand other views. Just parrots.

We have chosen the narrow way alright. Just not the narrow way Jesus meant. His narrow way opens wide our heart’s capacity to love (even our enemies!) and our mind’s capacity to consider others as more important than ourselves. If we hate more people and spew more derision than we did 5 years ago, we may believe in Jesus but make no mistake. We are not his disciples.

@GovAndyBeshear Agree totally as a retiree. SOMETHING needs to be addressed about the shortage of school bus drivers! Stringent specialized training, disrespectful student/parent behaviors, extreme responsibility with vague support and low pay. Thankful for those who persevere❤️

Do not imagine for a moment prayer doesn’t matter. Pray for Ukraine. Pray for divine intervention. Miraculous protection. Pray for the presence of Jesus to permeate households & hiding places & be a shield & comfort to them. Pray a psalm—maybe 27 or 31—as intercession.Let’s pray.
