“…This country needs you.
We need people to choose service over status. We need people who believe all problems are solvable. We need people who understand that democracy is not self-sustaining. It survives because ordinary people CHOOSE to participate in it. Because democracy is not only defended in elections.
This is the work you are inheriting now.
We need you.
And despite all the noise around us, I look at you, and I am optimistic…
because I’ve seen the compassion in your generation. Your intelligence. Your willingness to ask the tough questions. The way you hold my generation accountable—frankly, we need it.
The future of this country depends on people willing to make sacrifices for the good of all of us as a whole. People exactly like you.
So, graduates, congratulations.
Houston needs you.
Texas needs you.
Your country needs you.
If there’s one thing this University of Houston alum can tell you with confidence, it’s this: the work ahead will not always be easy. But it will always matter.”
