How Benjamin Franklin Defined Different European Peoples.

Briefly what they each meant in the 18th century:

- White: Very fair/pale complexion; Franklin mainly applied this to the English and Saxons.

- Swarthy: Darker or more “dusky” European complexion; included French, Spanish, Italian, Swedish, Russian and most German peoples.

- Saxons: Franklin considered Saxons “white,” unlike most other Germans, whom he called “swarthy.”

- Tawny: A broad 18th-century term for brown or tan complexions, used for peoples outside most of Europe.

- Unclear: Franklin never explicitly classified these populations, so their placement is unknown.

Important: These were loose 18th-century ideas about complexion and ethnicity, not modern scientific racial categories.
