The heart of the gospel is not that God finds something beautiful in us and accepts us for it. The heart of the gospel is that God finds us guilty, defiled, helpless, and exposed, yet clothes His people with the righteousness of His Son.

We do not stand before God wearing our sincerity, our tears, our religious effort, our obedience, or our best intentions. All of that is too stained to cover us before the Holy One. We need a righteousness that is not our own.

“I will rejoice greatly in the LORD, my soul will exult in my God; for He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness” (Isaiah 61:10).

This is what Christ has done for His people. He took our sin upon Himself, bore our guilt under the wrath of God, and gives us His righteousness as our covering before the Father.

“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

The gospel is not God pretending sinners are clean. It is God cleansing the guilty through the blood of Christ and clothing them in the perfect obedience of Christ. That is why the believer’s confidence is not found in self improvement, but in Christ alone.

“And may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ” (Philippians 3:9).

This is mercy beyond human pride. We brought shame, and He gave covering. We brought guilt, and He gave pardon. We brought nothing but sin, and He gave us Christ.

The sinner is not saved because God ignored his filth. He is saved because Christ bore it, washed it, and covered him with a righteousness that will never fail.

Beware of following Christ for anything other than Christ.

Secondary motives always corrupt true discipleship. Some follow for benefit, for comfort, for answers, for reputation, or even for escape. But when those things fade, so does their devotion. “You seek Me… because you ate of the loaves and were filled” (John 6:26).

Jesus does not call us to use Him, but to come to Him. “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me” (Luke 9:23). That is not built on gain, but on surrender.

True faith is not anchored in what we receive, but in who He is. “Whom have we in heaven but You? And besides You, we desire nothing on earth” (Psalm 73:25).

So we follow Him, not for what He gives, but because He is worthy.

If we follow Him at all, let it be for His own sake.
