Disabled person here: 100% this! No person wants to look at their escapist world and see something that limits their ability. Empowerment is not just acknowledging the existence of a problem it is imagining the means to surpass it. Even if that means is just imagination.
I’m sick of this discourse rearing its head again. Nobody’s saying disabled people don’t belong in fantasy. That deliberately misses the point.
The point is: in a setting full of magic, impossible technology and supernatural creatures, why is the most imaginative solution you can come up with to ferry around your hero or villain a regular-ass wheelchair?
Give me magitech legs. A floating disc. Levitation. An enchanted walking throne. A little construct that carries you around. A spectral steed. There are endless ways to portray a disabled character’s mobility while actually embracing the fantasy of the setting.
People who complain that “disabled people can't exist in fantasy” are just looking for reasons to be offended. Of course they can. That's never been the issue. The question is why fantasy should suddenly stop being imaginative when it comes to how they get around.
After seeing the original, I just couldn't stop picturing my character in this animation :3
I just had to get one for myself!
