Convenience can quietly become dependence.
On YAP, I sat down with brain and memory expert Jim Kwik (@jimkwik) to talk about digital dementia, digital deduction, and the cost of outsourcing memory and thinking to technology.
Jim uses “digital dementia” for relying on technology to remember things, and “digital deduction” for relying on it to think for us.
His warning is about what happens when the brain stops doing any of the work it can still do.
His muscle analogy makes the point: an arm in a cast does not get stronger—it weakens and atrophies.
What this means: use tools intentionally, but keep exercising memory, judgment, and attention.
Let technology assist you but don’t let it replace every mental rep.
Which task have you outsourced that you still want your brain to practice?
Someone reading my new book https://t.co/K0qEdRAfcR shared this topical quote with me: “The curse of discipline is that every day looks the same. The curse of indiscipline is that every year does.” Hits hard.
AI isn't going to replace people as much as it's going to reveal them.
If you're not that sharp it's going to amplify that. But if you have real experience, wisdom, and frameworks it becomes the most powerful tool you've ever had.
The question is which one are you? Full episode with @jimkwik is going live today.

AI can scale and amplify. But it only magnifies what people bring to it, chaos and confusion or clarity and competence. Human intelligence remains the multiplier.
Cognitive growth requires effort, what happens if we let AI remove all the friction?
What's one thing AI has made easier—but perhaps made you practice less?
Unpopular opinion: AI is creating a generation of intellectually malnourished people.
Not because AI is bad.
Because too many people are using it to replace thinking instead of amplify thinking.
The danger isn't artificial intelligence.
It's artificial competence.
The people who thrive in the AI era won't ask: “What can AI do for me?"
They'll ask: “What should only a human do?"
Judgment. Wisdom. Creativity. Empathy. Courage.
These become more valuable, not less.

The human brain is a prediction and pattern-recognition machine. The moment something makes sense, it becomes dramatically easier to remember.
That’s why understanding beats repetition.
People often say: “I have a bad memory.”
Usually, they were just never taught how to see connections.
Thoughts?
Many people think: 1st, 2nd, 3rd… are random abbreviations.
But they actually come from: firST secoND thiRD
Your brain remembers better when information stops feeling arbitrary.
That’s a secret to faster learning: Don’t force memorization. Find the pattern.
Your mind is built to recognize meaning, structure, and connection.
What’s a random fact you learned later actually had a hidden pattern behind it?
Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
This is why some people struggle to remember information. They try to memorize isolated facts instead of discovering relationships.
Learning becomes limitless when information becomes meaningful.
What’s another hidden pattern most people miss?
