In Naples, the rich and celebrities generally live in the “upper” part of the city. The middle class and the poor, on the other hand, reside in the “lower” part.

Unlike many other footballers, Dries Mertens chose the lower part of the city and decided to live in Posillipo. The Belgian player took on a socially impactful role in the area where he lived. A neighbor’s story, shared on Italian television, goes as follows: “When we saw Dries coming home late every night, we thought he had given in to the good life. Then we found out he was buying pizzas, driving around, and handing them out to the homeless.”

Speaking to UEFA’s official website, Mertens explained why he chose to live there:

“In Naples, you breathe football. It’s not just the young people, it’s also the grandmothers and the kids. It’s crazy! It’s something special: waking up, having coffee in the morning, and talking about football. I started to live like them; I love the food, the sea, all the islands here.”

Mertens spent nine seasons in Naples. As a Belgian, he became one of the most important figures in the city’s history. More recently, he was also among the footballers who spoke out against the genocide in Gaza. On his social media account, he shared the message “Israel is starving Gaza,” expressing his solidarity with Gaza.

He is a great footballer and a great human being.
