I agree that resourcefulness matters and creative constraints can lead to great work but telling someone they should reconsider the field because they can’t spare $50 is exactly where this becomes gatekeeping.
$50 doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone. Financial hardship isn’t simply a “starving artist mindset,” and someone’s budget tells you very little about their imagination or potential.
Commissioning an artist is a valid suggestion. Making it a requirement for someone to belong in a creative field is a different argument. Finding affordable tools without having to hire and learning to build with what you have is resourcefulness too. You can encourage people to invest in their work without dismissing those who aren’t there yet.
Commissioning an artist can be an option but “you shouldn’t be in this field” is where I disagree and seems like a elitist take. Someone’s budget or drawing ability doesn’t determine whether they have a story worth telling.
A single $50 character commission also doesn’t cover a whole cast, environments, editing and ongoing revisions. My point is that we should help people understand how to develop and protect their work with the resources they have. They deserve a starting point too.
@ForwardEditor AI essentially gave every human on earth an affordable creative studio, the future is going to be interesting. People have to learn how to use the AI tools first
@unsupervisedape Artists have so much to gain from AI. They can create and protect their original work, then use AI to build entire stories around it. It puts an affordable production studio within reach, making projects possible that once required Hollywood-level budgets.
@nelsonchu_@aworthystory Human authorship matters, but it doesn’t have to begin with the first sketch. Original human revisions can also qualify for protection. Many creators use AI because they can’t afford an artist. Clear guidance on developing and protecting those contributions would be helpful.
@aworthystory I get the IP concern, but many creators use AI because they can’t afford an artist or draw what they imagine. We need a clearer path to protecting meaningful human contributions (the writing, design decisions, and revisions that shape the final work)
AI will give every human being on the planet an affordable studio in which they can express their ideas. It will be the largest creative renaissance in human history
