The reported inclusion of questions about parents’ place of birth and religion in the upcoming Census is deeply troubling. The Census must not become a backdoor for the NPR and, eventually, the NRC. Citizenship cannot be tied to religion, and no census should be used to divide our people. The Union Government must immediately drop such divisive questions. Secular forces must stand united against this dangerous move.

The UDF Government’s silence in Kerala is equally worrying. The LDF Government had decided in 2019 that NPR would not be implemented in Kerala and reaffirmed this position ahead of the 2027 Census. The Congress cannot wash its hands of the NPR, having implemented it in 2010. Will the UDF Government stand up against this divisive agenda, or allow the Union Government’s political agenda to move forward?

The draft of the Delimitation Bill, 2026, that is now available in the public domain seems to suggest that the BJP-led Union Government is keen on proceeding with a delimitation exercise without accounting for the current proportional share of the States', vis a vis their representation in the Lok Sabha.

Such an exercise would be highly unjust, as it would penalise those very States - including Kerala - which took conscious efforts to sincerely implement the National Population Policy, 1976. On the other hand, States that lagged behind in population control measures would be seemingly rewarded for their ineffective implementation.

Federalism has been recognised as an inalienable part of the basic structure of our Constitution and in a federal democracy, the raison d'être for representation cannot be mere numbers. There has to be an inclusive approach by taking into account the sentiments of all those who would be impacted by the proposed delimitation exercise, especially the States.

A consensual approach in this matter is absolutely essential. The present attempt to increase the number of seats in the Lok Sabha, through an amendment proposed to be brought about in a haste will undoubtedly destroy the spirit of consensus, which was the corner stone of our Constitution making.

To rush through with the delimitation amendment, in the garb on implementing women's reservation is nothing but a ploy to mask the real objectives behind this entire exercise. The fact that it is being taken up when the election process to four State assemblies and one Union Territory is yet to be completed has raised genuine suspicions about the political considerations behind it.

Considering these strong grounds, it is imperative that the present Delimitation Bill which is sought to be taken up without fair amount of discussions be dropped forthwith.

At the same time, women's reservation in the Parliament and the Legislative Assemblies can be and should be implemented right away, without any linkages to delimitation or census.

The reported US–India trade deal raises serious concerns. Slashing tariffs and non-tariff protections will hurt Indian farmers, workers and domestic industry, while pushing the country into an unequal, subordinate position.
The full agreement must be placed before Parliament and the public. Any provision that compromises livelihoods, food security and economic sovereignty must be firmly resisted.

The apprehensions raised regarding the Malayalam Language Bill, 2025 do not reflect the facts or the inclusive spirit of the legislation passed by the Kerala Legislative Assembly. Kerala’s progress has always been rooted in comprehensive development anchored in equality and brotherhood. The Government remains steadfast in upholding the constitutional values of secularism and pluralism.

The Bill contains a clear and unambiguous non-obstante clause (Clause 7) to safeguard the rights of linguistic minorities, particularly the Kannada and Tamil speaking communities.

Key provisions ensure that no language is imposed and linguistic freedom is fully protected. In notified areas, Tamil and Kannada speakers may continue to use their mother tongues for official correspondence with the Secretariat, Heads of Departments, and local offices, with replies issued in the same languages.

Students whose mother tongue is not Malayalam are free to choose languages available in schools in accordance with the National Education Curriculum. Students from other states or foreign countries are not compelled to appear for Malayalam examinations at the IX, X, or Higher Secondary levels.

Kerala’s language policy is fully aligned with the Official Languages Act, 1963, and Articles 346 and 347 of the Constitution of India. India’s diversity is to be celebrated, not forced into a single mould.

Built on the Kerala Model of participation and transparency, our Government resists any erosion of federal rights while remaining equally committed to protecting the linguistic identity of every citizen.

Strongly condemn the Union Government’s decision to host Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a far-right extremist and a chief architect of Israel’s brutal occupation and expansionist agenda.
