Tech Isn’t Just for Billion-Dollar Unicorns. It’s for Fixing Broken Things That Affect Real People.
"The best technology doesn't just impress investors. It quietly fixes the daily frustrations of real people."
When I first got into the tech world, I made a mistake many ambitious founders make:
I believed that success meant building something big, flashy, and VC-approved.
I thought the goal was to chase billion-dollar valuations, unicorn headlines, and TechCrunch features.
Spoiler alert:
That thinking will lead you straight into building a product no one actually needs.
My Early Mistake: Building to Impress, Not to Solve
My first startup died a stillbirth.
Not because I didn’t work hard. Not because I didn’t believe.
But because I was solving a problem I thought was exciting — not one that was painful to real users.
We spent months building features.
We made pitch decks, not phone calls.
We dreamt about investors before understanding users.
"Real innovation doesn’t start with a pitch deck. It starts with a broken thing that someone is tired of enduring."
By the time we launched, we realized people weren’t that interested.
There was no deep pain. No urgent reason to switch.
And just like that, all the noise we created evaporated into silence.
Lesson learned:
Tech isn’t for claps. It’s for cures.
A Mini-Story: How Fixing Real Pain Changed My Approach
Fast-forward to this year.
After licking my wounds, I co-founded Vendyz — with a much simpler mission:
Fix a very real, very painful trust issue in Africa’s social commerce.
If you’ve ever tried buying from a vendor you found on Instagram or WhatsApp, you know the fear:
Will they deliver?
Will the product be real?
Will they disappear after you pay?
The streets of social commerce were full of scams and lost money.
Real pain. Every day.
Instead of building something fancy, we focused on one thing:
Restore trust between buyers and sellers.
We didn’t need a $10 million seed round.
We needed a small, committed tech team, deep user conversations, and a simple, focused solution.
Today, just months after launch of @myvendyz , our users are not just users — they are advocates.
Because we fixed a real broken thing, not an imaginary one.
The Big Lie the Startup World Sells You
Somewhere along the way, the tech world started selling a dangerous lie:
"If it’s not a billion-dollar idea, it’s not worth building."
I respectfully disagree.
Here’s the truth I learned the hard way:
Fixing a broken delivery system in a small city matters.
Solving a payments problem for small market traders matters.
Building trust between vendors and buyers matters.
Helping farmers track weather better matters.
It might not make TechCrunch’s front page.
But it will change people’s lives — and real impact compounds in ways you can’t always predict.
