Suspect Arrested After Viral Video Shows Father Shooting Dead Alleged Hijacker During Attempted Hijacking With His Children Inside The Vehicle

A 35-year-old man has been arrested following an attempted hijacking in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal, during which a father shot and killed one of his alleged attackers while protecting himself and his two children. The incident occurred on 9 October 2026 as the family was leaving their driveway.

Police said suspects approached the family’s vehicle, with one allegedly opening fire on the driver, who returned fire. The confrontation was captured on dashcam footage that has since gone viral on social media, showing the bakkie moving forward before crashing into a tree as the father continued shooting.

The footage also shows the father’s son helping his sister out of the passenger seat after the confrontation. Police arrested the 35-year-old suspect in KwaDabeka on Sunday, allegedly finding him in possession of an unlicensed firearm and 14 rounds of ammunition.

The suspect faces charges including attempted carjacking, attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. He is expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. The incident has drawn attention to the circumstances surrounding the father’s use of a firearm while his children were caught in the alleged hijacking.
