Huge congratulations to our colleagues in the Mental Health Hub in collab with @policescotland and @Scotambservice for winning in the Care for Mental Health Award at the NHS Scotland #healthawards24 🎉👏🏻🥳🙌
Things you can do in psychosis services (well, at least EIP) that you mysteriously can't do in 'PD' ones:
- adjust the therapeutic frame and boundaries to the person
- spend months on engagement
- support the patients belief system even if you disagree
- not force diagnosis
I don't know how we are still at the place where it's seen as ok to call people with a diagnosis of bpd/eupd, "PD's".
It's dehumanising and offensive. We need to challenge cultures in teams where this stigmatising language happens and make sure changes are made.
Whatever you think of the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder, it is simply unacceptable to treat patients with contempt, emotional distance and disbelief.
That is not boundaries; that is cruelty.

Prisons don’t work. The evidence is all there. Rather than expanding the criminal justice system invest in communities and decimated social, health and community support - education, housing, jobs, youth clubs, refuges, mental health, addictions.
The NHS pay award for 2024/25 is late.
Our members need an urgent substantial, above-inflation pay rise now.

Yesterday I taught my first class at @MHNAbertay, and shared some of my PhD findings around 'borderline personality disorder'. Great to have space to share my research, and to do these complex topics justice in our MH nursing specific course. Not all universities are as lucky.
Nursing is a fantastic career, but it's not valued or paid fairly.
Nurses are the vast majority of Band 5s. Over 60% experience sexual harassment. Female nurse suicide rates are higher than any other HCP.
We don't need more routes into nursing. We need systemic change.
Forensic Lead Nurse Forum held its last meeting of 2023. We want to wish all forensic practitioners a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year when it comes.

Incredibly simple model showing how people diagnosed with #borderlinepersonalitydisorder can remain in crisis during and after intervention. When people are treated poorly, they feel worse. The obvious is pointed out in this 2021 literature review here: https://t.co/9DAp6JfAco
"And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.^
Today the RRN launched a new #PsychologicalRestraint resource toolkit.
The resources aim to support practitioners to understand psychological restraint and provide tools to help services reduce its use.
