Many patients still refer to Welch Community Hospital as “No. 1.” The hospital’s name when it opened in 1902 was Miner’s Hospital No. 1. In 1912 it was changed to Welch Hospital No. 1. Then to Welch Emergency Hospital in 1931, and Welch Community in 2000.

I still don't feel that the medical establishment realizes this, or really has any interest in talking about it, but I hope for our sanity in enduring this and future pandemics, we will eventually learn the value of courage in medical leadership.

I finally found the language that I've been looking for to express my criticism of medical leadership during the first 6 months of the pandemic. They lacked COURAGE. Courage is a term that we use frequently when discussing patients but not so much for physicians.

Remember evidence level C recommendations? We can, should, and do reverse medical recs when more information becomes available. We have to be willing to make that decision based on level C evidence in the first place or as the last 2 year shows us the consequences are worse.
