They will not show you this on the nightly news: President Trump riding the Freedom Train, a full cavalry escort on horseback alongside him, celebrating 250 years of American independence. Pure patriotism.
A hundred years ago, the eastern bluebird was one of the most common birds in the country. Then it nearly disappeared.
Here's the problem: a bluebird can't build its own home. Neither can a chickadee or a wren. They're cavity nesters with no tools to dig a hole, so they move into ones that already exist: an old woodpecker hole, a rotted knot in a tree, a hollow in a dead limb, a soft spot in a wooden fence post.
Then we launched a relentless effort to tidy the world and put everything in its right place.
We cut down the dead trees, the "ugly" snags, and hauled them off. We swapped the old wooden fence posts for metal. We cleaned up every hollow stump and dying branch. And just like that, the nesting spots were gone.
Worse, two birds we'd imported from Europe, house sparrows and starlings, muscled into the few cavities left and threw the bluebirds out. By the 1970s, bluebird numbers had fallen by nearly 90%.
Here's where things began to turn. Ordinary people started nailing wooden boxes to posts. Just boxes, with a hole the right size. And the bluebirds came back, all the way back, one of the greatest comebacks in American conservation, built almost entirely by regular folks in their own yards with a little lumber.
So here's where you come in. A nest box isn't a cute decoration. It's a replacement for the dead tree we took down, a hole in the world for a bird that can't make its own.
Put one up, with the correct hole size for the bird you want, on a smooth pole a predator can't climb, and you stop being a bystander to that story.

.@FLOTUS@MELANIATRUMP announced the expansion of the @WhiteHouse honey program with the addition of a newly installed and fully functioning beehive on the South Lawn.
Hand-crafted by a local artisan in the image of the White House, the beautiful, new hive will add two new bee colonies to the existing two colonies that already produce the signature White House honey. 🍯 🐝
Bald eagles are devoted parents that share the vital task of incubating their eggs. After the female lays one to three eggs in a massive nest high in a tree, both the male and female take turns covering them to maintain a steady temperature of around 99–100°F (37–38°C) until they hatch in about 35 days.
The female typically spends more time on the nest—often in longer stretches—while the male relieves her for shorter periods so she can hunt and feed. During these shifts, the off-duty parent brings fresh fish or prey to the nest. This cooperative incubation ensures the eggs are never left exposed for long, protecting them from predators and harsh weather.
Once the chicks hatch, both parents continue their teamwork by brooding the young and providing food. This shared parental investment is a key reason bald eagles have made such a strong comeback in North America.
A symbol of strength and family commitment, the bald eagle’s partnership during the vulnerable egg stage highlights nature’s elegant teamwork.
I honestly thought this map was made up
Hundreds of supertankers, the kind that carry two million barrels each, are currently racing toward the US Gulf Coast from every direction. Atlantic, Indian Ocean, around Africa, the scenic route, the "we were heading to Saudi Arabia but NVM" route.
Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz and everyone panicked. Oil hit $126 a barrel. Gas hit $4 a gallon. Cable news did the thing where they put a red banner on screen and say "CRISIS" in a font that suggests you should be hoarding toilet paper.
And then something happened that nobody in media seems interested in reporting, for obvious reasons. The world just... switched suppliers? Like changing your internet provider except the internet provider is the entire effing global energy economy.
American oil exports are approaching record levels. Gulf Coast refineries are running at 95% capacity. Supertankers that were mid-ocean on their way to the Persian Gulf literally turned around and headed to Texas. That's not a metaphor. Ship tracking data shows them doing U-turns in the Indian Ocean.
Meanwhile China, which was getting 45% of its oil imports through Hormuz and paying basement prices for sanctioned Iranian crude, is now competing with Japan and Europe for the same expensive American barrels. Chinese manufacturers are already raising prices 20% on goods headed to the US.
So to summarize: Iran played its biggest card and the main result is that the United States became the world's emergency gas station and China's cheap energy subsidy evaporated.
This is either the most elaborate coincidence in the history of geopolitics... or someone planned the sequence Venezuela -> Iran -> profits!
I'll let you figure out which one
This is the cutest thing. It needs to be seen by all to bring joy, but the algorithm has its sight on the moon or the troubles of the day. Enjoy the cuteness of the calf.
Every spring around this time I get a 1/4 of beef from a local source. Not commercialized at all. Local, grass-fed, corn-finished beef.
I'm a nerd. So I keep track of this expense in a spreadsheet. How much I get in finished cuts to the hang weight, the price at hang and finish.
Today in Ogallala, Nebraska, I met with ranchers whose herds, operations, and multi-generational family legacies have been devastated by the largest wildfire in state history.
We flew an aerial tour over the ranchlands, received a full briefing from our wonderful leads on the ground, briefed press, and sat down for a heartfelt roundtable with these incredible families. Hearing their powerful stories firsthand — the heartbreak of generations of hard work lost in an instant, yet their fierce determination to rebuild stronger — was truly moving and inspiring.
The scale of this fire (the largest in state history and the 9th largest in American history) is overwhelming. But so is the grit and resilience of these ranching families who are the backbone of rural Nebraska and rural America.
@USDA and the entire Trump Administration are fully engaged and committed to standing with our ranchers through every step of response and long-term recovery.
In times like these, we come together. We pray. And then we get to work. Thank you to @SenatorFischer, @SenatorRicketts, @RepAdrianSmith, and @TeamPillen for hosting me in your amazing state. God bless all the firefighters who were with us today, and the thousands more who bravely battled the fires.
We are all Team Nebraska. 🇺🇸🙏🏻
The Mid-Ocean Ridge is the ultimate unwatched tragedy of modern science.
It's almost never mentioned in the climate debate. We obsess over a trace gas 0.042% of the atmosphere, yet ignore a 65,000 km volcanic spine that endlessly resurfaces the planet. How does that happen?
This isn't just a geological feature, it’s Earth’s primary circulatory system. While the narrative focuses on tailpipes, this ridge is quietly venting heat, minerals, and carbon on a scale that makes human activity look like a footnote.
New Evidence:
* Woods Hole research shows hydrothermal vent temperatures are volatile, spiking by 40°C in short bursts. This isn't a steady hum, it’s a pulsating engine room injecting vital energy into deep currents (the AMOC) that can take decades to surface.
* University of Sydney researchers argue we’ve significantly underestimated these ridges. When mid ocean ridge spreading speeds up, they don't just release CO2, they change ocean chemistry, dictating how much CO2 the water can hold.
* Scientists only recently discovered the Kunlun Hydrothermal Field. This is a 'vent metropolis' 100 times larger than the fabled Lost City. If we didn't know an 11 square kilometre volcanic field existed until last year, how can we claim to have settled the math on global emissions?
Does the climate narrative stop at the shoreline? While we argue over parts per million in the air, a 65,000 km natural wonder is busily creating the very crust we stand on.
It’s the origin of life, the driver of oceanic heat, and a massive, unmeasured variable in the carbon mystery.
This is a long post but a reflection of life during the first week of the war from my seat on the front row right in the bullseye.
It's 7:30am in Jerusalem. It's Shabbat. Quiet except for the missile alert siren at 5am this morning. Been exactly a week since war with Iran began. @janethuckabee & I & our 2 little dogs have been living in the Command Center, sleeping on cots to be able to deal with the moment by moment situation. Janet and the dogs are adjusting but they don't like the painfully loud sirens warning of incoming missiles, rockets & drones. It's a 24 hr a day schedule. When sirens aren't forcing everyone to shelter to dodge incoming ballistic missiles, the phone rings day and through the night w/ updates on everything from military activities to managing the embassy duties while our team is sheltering in place and working from home. Some in our mission, especially those with small children have evacuated on "authorized departure" which allows gov't staff to return to the US during a war or crisis. We are working around the clock to help evacuate American citizens trying to get back home. In the first days of the war, it was both difficult & dangerous to move people with all airspace closed & overland routes to Egypt or Jordan more risky than "sheltering in place." Totally fake news stories said "nothing was being done" to help Americans. Total lie. In the early hours and first days of war, the safest decision & what we urged our own Embassy personnel to do was stay close to shelter. Slowly, as the "battle rhythm" developed, we started physical evacuation first via buses to Egypt. There has been constant coordination with State Dept in DC to evacuate Americans SAFELY & promptly. 2 days ago, very limited flights started coming IN to Israel to bring Israelis home. We worked with El Al Airlines, the Israeli gov't & w/ State Dept Task Force in DC to get as many people on outbound planes as possible on the limited number of flights. It has been a 24 hr a day operation. Seeing utterly false news stories that US wasn't "doing anything" was a shock to embassy staff who have been busting their backsides, functioning with little or no sleep & themselves having to rush to bomb shelters repeatedly during the day and night & only having 90 seconds to take cover. We have now successfully evacuated thousands of people using every means possible, but focusing on helping people get home SAFELY. I'm proud of our team here. If you are an American citizen & taxpayer, you should be as well. I was amused to read comments online that I had returned to the US. Hardly. The Ambassador is the last one to leave. It's how it works. First duty is to America citizens. They are our real bosses. All of us here at the mission work for them. We know that & we work with that in mind. My other duty is to care for our team here. To insure the well-being of their families & to encourage our staff to take care of their physical and mental health as ballastic missiles the size of 18 wheel trucks come hurling toward us. I tried to get my wife to evacuate, but not surprisingly she would have none of it. She has weathered it with me even though there is no paycheck for her to sleep on a cot & endure days of making meals from PBJ sandwiches & things we had in the freezer at the residence we brought with us. No complaints though. It's a privilege to serve our country and its people & we are proud to serve @POTUS who courageous decision to stop the Iranian Regime's determined 47 year campaign to kill Americans & build a nuclear weapon to attack the US is something that should have happened long before. This war probably seems so far from those of you who live 6000 miles or more away from it, but rest assured the President wants to keep it that far away & end the threat completely. Had the fanatical religious zealots obtained a nuclear warhead and finalized long-range ballistic capability (and they were getting close to both) they would have used it on America. This is not a "war for Israel" as some of the very uninformed media voices and podcasters crow about. They are "often wrong, but never in doubt." I'm amazed at how lacking in facts some of them are but filled with an arrogant confidence that what they say is true. But they are far removed from the eyewitness intel & the front row seat I have. While they enjoy hefty paychecks from the "clicks" by being provocative, just know that halfway around the globe you have dedicated men & women who work for you for paychecks far less than they should be. They are on duty in war conditions & will continue at the task of serving Americans caught in the middle of a war. God Bless America, our courageous men & women in our military, & God Bless the men & women of YOUR Embassy in Israel!
The small Norwegian village of Skjolden (pop: 238) looks absolutely unremarkable on a map. Little more than a small settlement in inland Norway, surrounded by pretty mountains. However, and remarkably, Skjolden is actually a seaside village.

🚨 MELBOURNE ERUPTS as Iranians CELEBRATE Khamenei’s FALL
Chanting. Flags waving. Tears of relief.
Many calling it the beginning of a FREE IRAN.
You won’t see these scenes on the ABC.
Watch what unfolded.
Full story: https://t.co/b5EAGRByQc
Twenty-four hours ago there were seven countries in this conflict. Now there are twelve. By Monday there will be more.
Here is the full picture no single news feed is giving you.
Israel struck Tehran, Isfahan, Qom, Karaj, Kermanshah, Tabriz, and Lorestan in a single coordinated operation timed to the moment Iran’s senior leadership gathered in one room. Daylight strikes at 8:15 a.m. because the target was not infrastructure. The target was a meeting. Months of intelligence. One window. The first Israeli strike in history designed not to destroy a program but to decapitate a government.
Iran answered by firing missiles at every American installation it could reach. Bahrain’s Fifth Fleet headquarters. Al Dhafra in the UAE. Al Udeid in Qatar. Ali Al Salem in Kuwait. Jordan shot down two ballistic missiles over its own territory. One civilian killed in Abu Dhabi from debris. Every Gulf defense system activated simultaneously for the first time. Most intercepts succeeded. Iran demonstrated range. It failed to demonstrate precision.
And then the dominoes fell.
Saudi Arabia, which four weeks ago personally promised Tehran it would never allow its territory to be used against Iran, released a statement pledging “all its capabilities” to support every attacked nation in “all measures they take.” Dubai shut down both international airports indefinitely. 280 flights canceled. Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Air India, Lufthansa, British Airways grounded or rerouting. The busiest international aviation hub on earth went dark because Iranian missiles were crossing its airspace.
Now watch what is moving in the shadows. Russia signed a 500-unit Verba MANPADS deal with Iran in December. China is finalizing CM-302 anti-ship missiles for the IRGC navy. Joint Russia-China-Iran naval drills ran through the Strait of Hormuz eleven days ago. But when the strikes landed, Moscow issued a statement. Beijing issued a statement. Neither moved a ship, a plane, or a soldier.
Russia called it “unprovoked armed aggression.” China called it “extremely dangerous hegemonic bullying.” Then both sat on their hands while their ally absorbed precision strikes on its capital and fired missiles into six sovereign nations, building the very coalition Russia and China spent a decade trying to prevent.
Iran needed its allies to act. They wrote press releases.
This is the architecture of isolation. In 48 hours Iran went from a nation with diplomatic channels to Oman, trade ties to China, arms deals with Russia, and détente with Saudi Arabia to a nation that attacked its own mediators, exhausted its missiles against interceptors, and watched its partners choose words over weapons.
The regime that survived the June war. The regime that survived 32,000 protester deaths. The regime that survived economic collapse. That regime now faces precision strikes, a six-nation coalition, closed airspace, frozen diplomacy, and allies who condemn on television what they will not contest on the battlefield.
The war is 24 hours old. Iran is already alone. https://t.co/BrzGRrU3VW
