Over 11,000 of us have spoken up in the last four years through The Big Freelancer Survey, and those voices have made a HUGE impact on securing funding and shaping policies.

the idea that there’s no money for the arts is a fallacy. it’s a direct, conscious choice to continue to defund cultural institutions and art forms. to strip the youth of the country of opportunity and further ostracise the underclasses. we’re in a cultural crisis.
Freelance dramaturgs are being paid well below the national minimum wage, because their role reading plays for UK theatres is "significantly undervalued", the Dramaturgs’ Network script-reading survey has found.

Auditions/exposure don't pay bills. What is, are unreliable zero hours contracts for flexibility for auditions but you gotta work stupid hours to make ends meet that make you stressed to fuck
Tell the new grads this plz..being a working class jobbing actor is not glamorous🙃
KLAXON!!! #Migrant#theatre artists, help us prove how many/who we are! This is vital to make sure the theatre industry acknowledges the importance of involving us in casts and creative teams. Please FILL IT IN!

There’s so much we love about Fringe, but we know we’re not alone feeling burned out & alienated by it.
Theatre sector - take note, we need to do better at supporting emerging artists to work alongside their rent-paying jobs rather than being called out for “not being serious about their craft” because they have to take other roles!
I am disgusted but not surprised at a London Theatre terminating contracts with 3 weeks notice - sending a letter addressed ‘dear staff member’ during a cost of living crisis, asking employees for a paragraph on why they should be re-hired for the next show
For perspective, that’s on average 800 independent artists project grants that could’ve been funded. Oh and ENO are now in receipt of more money (£12mil per year) than all the disabled-led NPO’s (£7.25mil per year) after an UNSUCCESSFUL application. Let that sink in…

“We should dismantle this macho culture of who can work the hardest and destroy themselves. It is unnecessary and unproductive. I’m not going to do that anymore and I’m not going to train people to do that anymore!”

until the people who hold power decide to do things differently, to programme and contract differently, we won’t be living the equality our sector loves to talk about.' - @streetstephanie

The Big Freelancer Survey Report 2023 paints a stark picture of a freelance workforce ‘under siege’, facing the perfect storm of a cost-of-living crisis and the ongoing impact of Covid and Brexit, combined with deeply embedded structural inequalities.
