Comme on est en plein dans la période d'Halloween, j'en profite pour vous montrer le plus mignon des déguisements d'Halloween que j'ai vu au Japon 🍣 #Halloween2026#Halloween
It seems that Japan does not want foreign entrepreneurs anymore.
Due to the changes in the visa laws, new entrants to Japan under the Business Manager visa fell 80.9% from last year (Source: ISA first-half 2026 entry statistics from Oct 16th).
While I can appreciate that there were some foreigners gaming the system and using the Business Manager visa falsely, the ISA raised the bar a bit too high in my humble opinion.
If I did not have permanent residency, my company of over 10 years, which operates JOBS IN JAPAN, would not qualify me that visa.

Labor-shortage bankruptcies hit a first-half record
Tokyo Shoko Research recorded 240 “labor-shortage” bankruptcies in April–September, up 17.0% year on year and the highest first-half total since tracking began.
I wonder if the number would have been that high if Japan made it easier for foreigners to work in Japan.

Customer harassment and "recruitment sexual-harassment" prevention duties are now in force (from October 1)
Employers must take preventive measures against customer harassment and sexual harassment of job seekers. We've all experience or have friends that had to deal with such as;
• That one-to-one lesson with the old pervert, asking intrusive questions about an applicant’s sex life.
• That student with the sexual jokes or persistently pushing private dinner invitations.
• Persistently pushing private dinner invitations in a way that interferes with their job-seeking.
• Monster parents verbally abusing teachers through threats, personal insults or prolonged aggressive shouting (Legitimate complaints are not automatically harassment).
The school’s duty is to have measures to prevent and respond to that abuse and protect its staff, rather than cowardly leave the teacher to deal with it alone.

While this also technically covers recruiting and interviewing, any company that exhibits such behavior in the interview is one you don't want to work for.
Japan’s Specified Skilled Worker population has hit 444,256. The number is impressive. The employer homework is less glamorous: clear job ads, decent onboarding and a reason to stay.
“Please don’t leave” is not a retention strategy.

Workers aged 65+ reach a record 9.43 million
While Japan is making it harder for foreigners to come to Japan to work....or even stay here to work, approximately one in seven employed people in Japan is now 65 or older. (Statistics Bureau figures for 2025 show employment among people aged 65+ increased for the 22nd consecutive year to 9.43 million).
Something tells me that depending on senior citizens is not the answer for Japan's worker shortage.
Something is going to have to give as Japan needs more foreign workers.

“They have a residence card” isn’t a hiring strategy.
Not just visas, Japan is cracking down on illegal employment.
From April 1, 2027, facilitating illegal employment in Japan can mean up to 5 years in prison, a ¥5m fine, or both.
Check work rights, permitted duties and hour limits. Paperwork is boring. Court is worse.
