Today, #JMPD Community Outreach & Tracing Unit officers, in partnership with SAPS, Memeza & the Community Policing Forum (CPF) conducted a Drinking & Driving Awareness Campaign at Alexandra Mall.

The campaign focused on educating members of the public about the dangers of drinking & driving, encouraging responsible decision-making & promoting safer road user behaviour. Officers engaged with motorists & pedestrians by sharing road safety information (phamphlets), highlighting the legal consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol & encouraging the use of designated drivers or alternative transport after consuming alcohol.

Through collaborative awareness initiatives such as these, law enforcement & community stakeholders continue to strengthen road safety, reduce alcohol-related accidents & foster a culture of responsible driving.

​JMPD OFFICERS APPREHEND THREE SUSPECTS FOLLOWING A SHOOTOUT IN LINDEN

​The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) commends the swift and decisive action of three of our officers following a shooting incident that led to the arrest of three suspects linked to vehicle theft and signal jamming in the Boskruin and Linden areas.

​On Thursday, 30 July 2026, JMPD Region C officers were conducting routine visible policing when they received an alert from the Vuma Tracking Camera system regarding a suspicious vehicle operating in the Boskruin area, reportedly involved in vehicle theft and signal jamming.

​The officers tracked the vehicle's location and spotted it travelling along Malibongwe Drive. They monitored the vehicle until it pulled into a BP Service Station at the corner of Malibongwe Drive and Central Street in Linden.

​As the officers approached the vehicle, which was occupied by three adult males, the driver attempted to speed off. One of the passengers pointed a firearm at the officers, prompting them to discharge their firearms to neutralise the threat.

​The vehicle came to a stop shortly after the shooting. Two suspects sustained gunshot wounds, while a third suspect was apprehended unharmed at the scene.

​Emergency Medical Services were immediately dispatched to the location, and the two injured suspects were transported under police guard to Helen Joseph Hospital for medical treatment. The uninjured suspect was arrested and processed at the Linden Police Station.

​The vehicle used by the suspects has been seized and booked into the Aeroton SAPS vehicle pound for further forensic investigation.
​A formal case has been registered at the Linden Police Station.

​The JMPD remains committed to ensuring the safety of Johannesburg residents and tackling crime head-on through vigilant patrols and the effective integration of technology.

The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety, Cllr Moshe Koma, commends the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) CCTV Reaction Unit for their professionalism, tactical discipline, and vigilance, which resulted in the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of two illegal firearms in Jeppestown.
This successful operation once again demonstrates the critical role that proactive policing and intelligence-led operations play in removing dangerous weapons from our
streets and preventing violent crime before it occurs.

On the evening of Monday, 27 July 2026, officers from the JMPD CCTV Reaction Unit
were conducting routine crime prevention patrols in Jeppestown when they identified a
suspicious white Toyota Corolla Quest travelling along Jules Street with three occupants.
The officers intercepted the vehicle at the intersection of Hand and Hanau Streets, near the Jeppe Hostel. While approaching the vehicle, officers observed what appeared to be
an AK-style rifle inside. Exercising exceptional restraint and tactical awareness, they se-
cured the scene, requested immediate backup, and engaged the occupants without
compromising officer or public safety.
Following the arrival of additional officers, the three occupants, who displayed visible
signs of intoxication, were instructed to exit the vehicle. A comprehensive search led to
the recovery of two rifles with serial numbers removed, together with live ammunition.
The suspects were unable to produce any lawful documentation or provide a satisfac-
tory explanation for their possession of the firearms.
All three suspects were arrested and detained at Jeppe SAPS, where they face charges relating to the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

#JMPD TRU officers together with the PRASA Intervention Unit gathered information regarding two outstanding suspects wanted in connection with an attempted hijacking & attempted murder. The suspects had previously evaded arrest after fleeing from officers during a pursuit.

The information led the operational team to a residence on Paul Street, Lawley 2 where the suspects were allegedly hiding. The officers proceeded to the address & conducted a search of the premises. Both suspects were successfully located & arrested. During the search, the officers recovered an unlicensed firearm & live ammunition in their possession.

The suspects were detained at Ennerdale SAPS and will face charges relating to attempted hijacking, attempted murder & possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

#JMPD TRU officers came across a male standing outside a scrapyard at the corner of Marshall & Kruger Streets in Johannesburg. The officers requested that he produce valid identification, a passport, or asylum documentation. The suspect failed to provide any legal documentation authorising his stay in South Africa.

Following further questioning, it was established that he was in the country illegally. He was escorted to Jeppe SAPS for verification where he was charged with contravention of the Immigration Act.

While conducting routine patrols on the N3 South, #JMPD TRU officers spotted a suspicious blue BMW & stopped the vehicle for inspection.
During the search, officers discovered that the registration number plates affixed to the vehicle did not correspond with the registration details displayed on the licence disc. A further search of the vehicle led to the recovery of two additional registration number plates both bearing different registration numbers. The driver was arrested for Fraud & Resisting Arrest. He was detained at Sandringham SAPS.

Tampering with vehicle registration details is a serious criminal offence. Criminals should know that #JMPD remains committed to combating vehicle-related crime and ensuring that those who violate the law are brought to justice.

JMPD CCTV REACTION UNIT ARRESTS THREE SUSPECTS AND SEIZED UNLICENSED FIREARMS IN JEPPESTOWN

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) continues its relentless effort to remove illegal firearms from the streets of Johannesburg following the successful arrest of three male suspects in Jeppestown.

On the evening of Monday, 27 July 2026, officers from the JMPD CCTV Reaction Unit were conducting routine crime prevention patrols in Jeppestown when they observed a suspicious white Toyota Corolla Quest sedan with three occupants traveling along Jules Street.

Officers intercepted and pulled over the vehicle at the intersection of Hand and Hanau Streets, near the Jeppe Hostel.

As officers approached the vehicle to conduct an inspection, they observed what appeared to be an AK-style rifle inside the vehicle. Maintaining complete composure, officers secured the scene, requested immediate backup, and engaged the driver without alerting the occupants to the discovery.

Upon the arrival of backup, officers ordered the three occupants, who exhibited visible signs of being under the influence of alcohol, to step out of the vehicle. A thorough search of the suspects and the vehicle led to the discovery and seizure of two rifles with the serial numbers filed off, alongside live ammunition. The suspects failed to provide a lawful account or documentation for the firearms.

All three male suspects were arrested and detained at the Jeppe South African Police Service (SAPS). The suspects have been charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The JMPD commends the Reaction Unit officers for their tactical discipline, bravery, and alertness, which prevented potential violent crime and ensured high-caliber illegal weapons were safely removed from our communities.

JMPD INTENSIFIES ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN: 211 MOTORISTS ARRESTED FOR DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) reaffirms its zero-tolerance stance on reckless and irresponsible road behaviour following coordinated enforcement operations, roadblocks, and targeted patrols conducted across the City of Johannesburg from Monday, 20 July 2026 to Sunday, 26 July 2026.

During this one-week operational period, JMPD officers successfully apprehended a total of 211 motorists found driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol.

Driving under the influence remains one of the leading contributors to fatal road crashes and pedestrian fatalities within the municipality. The JMPD continues to deploy specialised units, regional operational teams, and Alcohol Evidence Centres (AEC) across all regions to detect and remove intoxicated drivers before harm occurs.

Arresting 211 intoxicated drivers in a single week highlights an ongoing, reckless disregard for human life on our roads. Driving under the influence is not an oversight, it is a conscious choice that puts every road user at risk. Each arrest made by our officers represents a potential road collision prevented and lives saved. JMPD officers will maintain a 24/7 presence across all sectors to ensure our communities remain safe.

The JMPD strongly advises motorists who plan to consume alcohol to arrange alternative transport, designate a sober driver, or make use of e-hailing services. Officers will continue to execute high-visibility roadblocks and roving patrols day and night.

Officers approached the individuals & after a brief engagement, it was established that one of the males is a foreign national. When requested to produce documentation confirming his legal status in the country, he was unable to do so.

The male was arrested for contravention of the Immigration Act and detained at JHB Central SAPS.

While responding to the alleged business robbery complaint in Kensington, #JMPD TRU officers received info that the suspect, believed to be heavily armed, fled the scene in a white Toyota Rumion. The officers searched the surrounding area & located the suspected getaway vehicle parked off-road in Hieler Street, Troyville.

The owner of the vehicle approached the officers & claimed ownership. Upon inspection, officers discovered that the licence disc did not correspond with the vehicle's registration plates. When questioned, the owner admitted that he had changed the registration plates because the vehicle was allegedly due to be repossessed by ABSA Bank.

The suspect was arrested for fraud & the vehicle was booked into the Aeroton SAPS Pound for further investigation.
