The way Ralph Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings (1978) portrays Saruman's growing influence over Rohan and Edoras through the White Hand feels completely different from the film's opening.

The extensive use of rotoscoping creates a dark, hopeless, and war-driven atmosphere, especially as the story builds toward the Battle of Helm's Deep.

Years later, many of the dark, bleak, and dramatic moments in Peter Jackson's The Two Towers seem to echo the visual tone first established in Bakshi's film.
