I think you’re doing the same thing you’re accusing evangelicals of doing.

You have reduced the evangelical position to, “Mormons think works save them,” and then spent the entire conversation arguing against that caricature.

I understand that Latter-day Saints believe Jesus saves. I understand that you believe salvation is by grace. I understand that you do not believe you can save yourself apart from Christ.

But those were never the central questions.

The real questions are:

Who is Jesus?

What is the gospel?

What must a person do to be saved?

When you say “Jesus,” do you mean the same Jesus preached by the apostles? When you say “grace,” do you mean the same thing Paul meant? When you say “salvation,” do you mean the same thing the New Testament means?

Those are the issues under discussion.

The fact that both of us use the words Jesus, grace, faith, repentance, obedience, and salvation does not prove we mean the same things by them.

So rather than debating whether Mormons believe Jesus saves, let’s discuss whether the Jesus presented in LDS theology is the same Jesus presented in Scripture, and whether the gospel taught in the LDS Church is the same gospel preached by the apostles.

In other words, if the Apostle Paul walked into a modern LDS ward, would he recognize its teaching about God, Christ, salvation, priesthood, temples, exaltation, and eternal progression as the faith he preached?

That seems to me to be the real question.

Taking things out of context is dangerous. In the same prayer Jesus says: “And now, Father, glorify me at your side with the glory I had with you before the world existed.” (John 17:5)

That is a very unusual statement for a mere prophet to make. God’s glory belongs to God. Yet Jesus claims to have shared that glory with the Father before creation

Since you accept John 17:3 you must also accept John 17:5.
