It's perihelion day, Today.

In Northern Hemisphere we're right in the middle of winter, but Earth is actually at its closest position to the Sun.

Today the Earth is 5 million kilometeres closer to the Sun than it is are in early July.

So why isn't hotter than in July? Because Earth's tilt (and not its distance from the Sun) causes seasons.
