I was on a train in Tokyo. We stopped between stations. Announcement in Japanese, then in English: "We apologize for the delay. We will resume shortly."

The delay was maybe 3 minutes. Not a big deal.

When the train started moving again, another announcement: "We sincerely apologize for the delay. We were stopped for 3 minutes and 20 seconds. This is unacceptable. Thank you for your patience."

Three minutes and twenty seconds. They measured it exactly. And called it unacceptable.

When I got off at my stop, there were station staff on the platform bowing and handing out delay certificates.

I took one out of curiosity. It was an official document stating that the train had been delayed by 3 minutes and 20 seconds, signed and stamped.

The staff member said in English "for your employer. So they know the delay was not your fault."

I said I'm a tourist, I don't need it. He looked confused. "But the delay affected you. You deserve an apology."

Three minutes. They were treating a three-minute delay like a major incident.

Later I mentioned this to a Japanese friend. They said "oh yes, delay certificates are normal. Trains are supposed to be exactly on time. If they are late, they must apologize."

I said three minutes isn't late, it's nothing. My friend said "in Japan, three minutes is late. On time means on time. Not approximately on time."

They said the train company probably investigated why there was a 3-minute delay. "They will find the cause and fix it so it doesn't happen again."

I kept the certificate. It's framed in my apartment now. A reminder that somewhere in the world, people care about three minutes.

📍For an international student applying for a Canadian 🇨🇦 study permit, using one consolidated bank account (or as few accounts as possible) is generally the better and safer option compared to using multiple separate accounts.

▪︎ IRCC officially allows multiple accounts. You can submit bank statements or official bank letters from more than one account (including foreign accounts).

▪︎ The proof of funds can come from one or more sources, as long as the total liquid/available funds meet or exceed the required amount (tuition for the first year + living expenses, currently around CA$22,000 – CA$23,000+

▪︎ IRCC lists "bank statements (for your Canadian or foreign bank account) for the past 4 months" and accepts evidence from multiple financial institutions.

🚨 However, one account (or consolidated funds) is simpler and less risky.

📍Multiple accounts often trigger more scrutiny, especially if:

▪︎ The funds appear recently transferred or split across accounts (possible red flag for "fund parking" or suspicious activity).

▪︎ Balances fluctuate a lot or show an inconsistent history.

▪︎ You come from a country with higher refusal rates (many African, South Asian, etc. applicants face this).

You almost always need to include a letter of explanation when using multiple accounts to clarify:

▪︎ who owns each account,
▪︎ how the total is calculated,
▪︎ the source of funds, and
▪︎ that the money is readily available/accessible.

Without a clear explanation, officers may doubt the genuineness or availability.

My husband transferred ₦5,000 to me to manage. I was so happy and thanked him warmly.

But later at night while we were talking on the phone, I asked him a simple question:

“Have you eaten?”

He avoided the question.

I asked again, and again.

Finally he said something that br0ke my heart.

He told me he was managing the little money left with him for the next day, so he would just sleep like that.

This same man only ate around 2pm as his breakfast, because he was trying to save money, yet he still sent ₦5,000 to his family.

I asked him to tell me his remaining balance.

When he did, my heart dropped.

₦1,200.

Just ₦1,200 left with him.

At that moment I became quiet. This is not the first time he has put his family before himself, but this one touched me deeply.

I told him I would send him money to eat.

He refused.

He kept saying “I will manage.”

I ended the call quietly.

Then I sent him ₦3,000 from the same ₦5,000 he sent to me.

And I warned him:

“Record yourself eating and send me the video before I will talk to you again.”

Because he was already insisting that he would return the money.

He started calling me immediately.

But I refused to pick his calls.

I waited.

Not long after, a video came in.

There he was, eating.

The moment I saw it, I smiled so hard. My heart was so happy.

How can a man be suffering just to make sure his family is okay?

Before ending the conversation, I warned him again:

“Anytime you return looking worse than the way you left this house, I will send you back to look better than when you left.”

But the sweetest part?

The way he was thanking me for the ₦3,000 I sent him.

Meanwhile, it was the same money he sent to me earlier.

Life.

Good men are truly going through a lot for their families.

Sometimes they keep quiet.
Sometimes they sacr!fice in silence.
Sometimes they go hungry, just so their family can smile.
