Canada is moving to restrict the captivity of elephants and great apes through proposed legislation known as Bill S-15, which has passed the Senate. The bill seeks to prohibit keeping species such as elephants, chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, and bonobos, with limited exceptions for conservation, animal welfare, or scientific purposes.
Currently, around 25 elephants and just over two dozen great apes remain in captivity across Canada, mostly in zoos. In the wild, elephants travel long distances daily, sometimes up to 50 km, while great apes depend on complex social structures and stimulating environments. These needs are difficult to replicate in captivity, where conditions especially in colder climates, can contribute to both physical and behavioural challenges.
The proposed law would also prevent their use in entertainment, including rides and circus-style performances. If enacted, Canada could become the first country to phase out elephant captivity nationwide, building on its earlier ban on keeping whales and dolphins in 2019.
The move reflects a growing global shift toward recognizing animals as sentient beings with needs that are often incompatible with captive settings.

🚨 Huge victory for beagles!
After years of undercover investigations and public pressure, Ridglan Farms—the second largest dog supplier for U.S. labs—is closing its doors. Thousands of beagles who were born only to be experimented on now have a chance at real freedom and a life as beloved family members.
Inspections exposed overcrowded cages, invasive surgeries, and stressed, suffering dogs, but constant community activism and media attention forced change. Ridglan is required to stop breeding dogs by next summer, and rescue groups are already stepping in to save and rehome as many beagles as possible.
This comes after the shutdown of Envigo, another notorious beagle breeder, showing that when people stay informed, speak up, and refuse to look away, lives are truly saved. Let’s keep the momentum going: share this story, support adoption and rescue organizations, and continue to demand an end to animal testing on dogs. Every beagle deserves a safe, loving home—not a laboratory cage.

Finally, Spain has taken a stand for animals and recognized pets as true family members.
A new law has changed everything, officially recognizing dogs, cats, and other pets as living beings with feelings, not objects.
This shift means animals in Spain now have stronger protections in cases of divorce, abuse, abandonment, and accidents. Judges must consider the animal’s well-being, just like they would with any other family member.
It also allows survivors of domestic violence to keep their pets safe, prevents animals from being seized for debt, and ensures they cannot be mistreated without serious consequences.
Animal rights groups have called the move historic, saying it reflects what millions of people already knew in their hearts. Pets are companions, emotional partners, and part of daily life, not possessions to be divided or ignored.
Spain now joins a growing list of countries recognizing the emotional bond between humans and animals. Many hope this change will inspire others to follow.
A world where every pet is treated like family feels a little closer.
