As I am around people this week, you begin to hear similar conversations happening over and over usually around people’s stress levels. The main issues people are facing are tied to the economy: gas prices, grocery prices, and interest rates. I have talked to real estate agents who have not sold anything lately. Young people are concerned about climbing rental prices. What do all of these concerns have in common? The war in Iran. The closure of the Straits of Hormuz has driven gas prices up along with the infrastructure around it that fuels 20% of the world’s economy. Today, another ceasefire is still being discussed but not yet ratified. Questions surrounding their nuclear program and the Strait continue to be debated…we will see.

So, how should we think about this war and how it affects us?

Iran is not going away. The ancient name for Iran is Persia. Persia is mentioned all through the Old Testament. Esther, for example, was written during the time that Persia ruled the world including the Jews. The book of Daniel actually prophesied about Persia being a world power. Daniel 8 and 11 as well as Ezekiel 38, 39 also foretell a future time when Iran/Persia will join with other countries including Turkey, Russia, Libya, Sudan, Algeria, and Tunisia will band together against Israel. Iran is weakened, but you can take it to the bank that they will mount an offense against Israel. This leads us to….
Pay attention to Turkey. Turkey and Iran have historically butted heads which carries through to today over who would be the most powerful nation in the region. Prophetically, Turkey plays a huge part in the revived Roman Empire in the last days. Many theologians believe that the region would produce the antichrist referring to Ezekiel 38 and 39, Micah 5:5-6, and Revelation 13:1-2,4-7.
Watch for talks of Peace Deals. In the last few days, the Trump administration called for all of the Gulf States, including Iran, to sign the Abraham Accords. These are historic agreements that normalize relations between Israel and several Arab/Muslim countries. They agree to recognize Israel through diplomacy and trade. Trump has called on Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey, and Jordan to sign the accords. This is huge historically but mainly because of several biblical prophecies about a future “firm covenant with the many for one week” Daniel 9:27. Other prophecies speak to a false peace that will take place at the beginning of the Tribulation (1 Thessalonians 5:3 above). The antichrist will come as a man of peace.
Don’t put your trust in man. “Thus says the LORD, ;Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind and makes flesh his strength, and whose heart turns away from the LORD. ... Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD And whose trust is the LORD.’" - Jeremiah 17:5, 7. Don’t put your trust in a world leader, podcaster, or celebrity. No one knows the exact events of the future. The best thing is to be prepared. Are you prepared? Being prepared spiritually is most important. Do you have your sins forgiven? Jesus promises to forgive you on the spot if you will repent and confess Him as your Savior and Lord. If you are a believer, get armed with the Word. What is your mission? People’s eternal destinies are at stake. We all get distracted at times thinking that life is about my comfort. We get comfortable when we get blessed so much. Where is God calling you into? You will never regret listening to the Lord, giving Him your fear, and stepping into where He is calling you.

How do I know what to pay attention to and what to ignore?

Disclaimer: I am easily distracted. Most of you know that. I tend to think of it as being mentally flexible! Anyway, we are all struggling to know what are the things that I need to focus on today and what is just in my way. Just think of all the things that we deal with:

On the personal level, we have bills to pay, jobs to do, relationships to work on, chores to do, and projects we would like to do. Some of us have very serious situations with our family or our health. Much of the health crises today revolve around stress, anxiety, and depression.
On the community level, friendships take work. Church is work. People miscommunicate, especially today because most of our conversations take place through texts, emojis, and gifs. We don’t know how to talk anymore. I heard a story this week from Pat MacAfee, a well-known sportscaster, who described his anxiety about not being able to communicate with the world because he went to the Masters Golf tournament. After awhile, he was amazed at how nice it was to talk to total strangers without anyone on a device.
On the global level, everything is on fire. We are at war with Iran. No, wait. We agreed to a ceasefire. Nope, that lasted 5 minutes. Does the President think he is a doctor or Jesus? Why? Now, today, our government is saying that there is a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. Russia is threatening to strike a drone firm in Israel. Oh yeah, Artificial Intelligence will rule us all then kill us all. It must be the antichrist. No wait, I thought it was Trump, or Elon? Or the Pope?

You get my drift. We are drowning in information and crises - some manufactured, others very legitimate. So, again, how do I know what to pay attention to and what to ignore? The answer is seek God’s Kingdom and His righteousness. Start each day in communion with God through His Word. Keep the conversation going with the Lord through the day. The Holy Spirit will lead you. To break is down further, ask Him to give you what His priorities are for you today. Then, go do those 3-5 things that day. Don’t let anything pull you away from those particular tasks that God has put on your heart.

Here is another way to think about it. Steve Jobs, the founding CEO of Apple, took a term from the radio engineering world called “signal to noise ratio”. Basically, you have a list of 10 things to do that day. These are not regular, normal tasks like brushing your teeth. These are tasks that tie into who your are and your job. Out of those 10 things, only 3-5 may be what you can accomplish today. Those 3 things are what he called signal. Everything else is just noise. Those things that are signal are to be accomplished that day with the utmost of our determination. Noise is just noise. Ignore it. It may be important, but not for today.

We are to be about God’s Kingdom and His righteousness. We carry God’s Kingdom wherever we go as well as His righteousness because we are in Christ. This is the way God sees us: in the Kingdom and righteous. So, our deciding what is signal and what is noise today gets real easy when we realize how God sees us and what our particular task for spreading His Kingdom looks like. For sure, Kingdom-seeking will involve a life lived holy and wholly to God as well as taking the Gospel to those who do not know Jesus. So, I challenge you - ask God what is the signal that He wants you to focus on today? Let everything else be the noise.

Speaking of signal, this Sunday is the Lord’s Day. Don’t listen to the noise. Worship with your church family. This Sunday, we are going through the entire Old Testament discovering Jesus through every page! See you then!
