Scientists have named the first cat species completely new to science in over 100 years. It weighs three pounds, lives in Bolivia's cloud forest, and the first one anyone examined spent a year living in a stranger's house.
A man found it as a spotted kitten on a forest road and took it home, thinking it was a lost pet. After a year he decided it was too wild to live with and handed it to a sanctuary. The sanctuary called Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz, a Bolivian biologist who runs the country's wild cat research program, to say they had a weird cat.
She drove out, took a hundred photos, and logged it as a little spotted cat, the species thought to range from Costa Rica to Brazil. In 2019, making a booklet on Bolivia's cats, she set her photos beside a Brazilian reference image. The ring-shaped markings on her animal were far too big.
DNA settled it. With geneticists at the University of Antwerp and the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, the team read the full DNA of 38 cats from the same group. Eight of them were skins in museum drawers. The Bolivian cat branched off from its nearest relatives 1.4 million years ago, about the gap between a lion today and the cave lions that died out with the Ice Age.
They named it Leopardus tilcayo, after the word people in the Yungas cloud forest already used for it. Nobody there could say what it means. One man said his grandfather called it tilcayo, so he does too.
Wild cats do get added to the list. The tiger cat was split into two species in 2013, and a third in 2024. The Sunda clouded leopard was recognized in 2006 from specimens already in museums. Those were animals science already had, filed under a different name. This one was not, so the team calls it the first completely new cat since the pampas cat in 1923.
Scientists add roughly 65 new mammal species a year, and the global count reached 6,759 last year, up almost 70 percent since 1980. The cat family has stayed at about 40 species since the 1700s.
The same paper turns three tiger cat species into five. The IUCN, which keeps the global endangered species list, has been treating tiger cats as two vulnerable species and will now assess all five separately. The range and the numbers that once belonged to one species now split five ways, into smaller pieces of map and smaller counts of cats. The DNA also shows several of them, tilcayo included, have already lost 60 percent or more of their population.
Only two tilcayos have ever been examined. One is a ten-year-old male at the sanctuary, 18 inches long. The other was a female that locals attacked, let back into the forest once she recovered. Two animals are all the evidence science has for a cat that has bred apart from every other cat since long before humans existed.

🚨 2026 ACR JIA guideline update - 5 points worth remembering
A few practical messages stand out:
• Systemic JIA: IL-1 or IL-6 inhibition is strongly recommended early, rather than relying on NSAID or csDMARD monotherapy.
• sJIA with MAS: biologic therapy plus systemic glucocorticoids forms the initial treatment approach.
• Oligoarthritis: intra-articular glucocorticoids remain first-line, with triamcinolone hexacetonide preferred.
• Polyarthritis: start DMARD therapy early; methotrexate remains the preferred csDMARD, and TNFi the preferred first biologic when a bDMARD is chosen.
• Uveitis: high-risk children need ophthalmic screening every 3 months; methotrexate and adalimumab remain key treatment options when chronic anterior uveitis requires systemic therapy.
Also worth remembering: in remission, taper rather than abruptly stop biologic therapy.

Somatic Mutations in a Large Cohort of Chinese Patients With Immune Dysregulation
Key Points:
• This study delineated the genetic landscape of pathogenic somatic mutations underlying immune dysregulation diseases.
• Findings expand the genetic diagnostic landscape and highlight the importance of considering somatic mutations in germline-negative patients.
• Novel somatic pathogenic genes and variants add to the diagnostic spectrum and support improved diagnosis and targeted treatment.
• Longitudinal monitoring of somatic mutation ratio may improve precision medicine.
🚨 I am excited to share the very first Delphi consensus paper on #POTS and #dysautonomia! I am honored to serve as a co-Chair on this clinician-led, Multidisciplinary International POTS and Dysautonomia Expert Panel! We achieved unanimous consensus on 24 of 31 statements and very strong consensus on the remaining 7 statements. The goal of this initiative was to improve clinical care of patients with POTS and dysautonomia and to provide clinician education.
‼️Key points:
✔️POTS represents a subset of patients with dysautonomia.
✔️Patients who do not fulfill the diagnostic criteria for POTS may have dysautonomia that is not POTS (non-POTS dysautonomia).
✔️Both POTS and dysautonomia need to be diagnosed and treated correctly - not with psychotherapy or antidepressants.
✔️Patients with POTS and patients with non-POTS dysautonomia need to have access to care, work and school accommodations and disability benefits if necessary.
✔️Therapeutic trials, multidisciplinary patient care and physician education/training are needed to advance the field and improve the lives of patients with POTS and patients with non-POTS dysautonomia.
