@CerberusXt The closest thing to “human soldiers fighting to protect their planet and families” are the planetary defense forces – who are purposefully kept too weak to actually defend their planet and families for more than a few hours, as the imperium fears rebellion more than invasion.
@best_lindon@BitsHammer@LordLynkz The spectacular way this planned obsolescence backfired is one of the reasons I am convinced that his grand designs were always doomed to fall apart by their own inherent flaws and weaknesses, even without the active interference of the Chaos Gods.
@best_lindon@BitsHammer@LordLynkz The Iron Warriors’ wasteful and inflexible tactics only really make sense when seen as less-than-human. They are cursed with a creativity that they are genetically incapable of expressing – the “stubbornness” in their genetics forcing them to always return to the meat grinder.
@best_lindon@BitsHammer@LordLynkz This might be what draws me to the Iron Warriors over the more flashy Heretics. They were among the most Astartes Astartes and it broke them completely – whatever their battle cry claims. Now, their only meaningful purpose is waging war to bring an end to the never ending war.
@TheSilentKing15@BitsHammer@PaulMal21 Although the feudal-fascist way the Imperium is run is quite decentralised, with governors enjoying quite a bit of leeway as long as they meet their tithes, the Imperium does have a lot of ways to make sure that their power remains fractured and limited.
@TheSilentKing15@BitsHammer@PaulMal21 There is definitely a difference between the ideology of the Imperium and how it is actually run. The Imperium desperately wants to be a totalitarian fascist state, where every human in every part of the galaxy is an obedient cog in the machine that serves the will of Terra.
@RobWritesPulp Somewhere in the German-speaking academic community, a Prof. Dr. Dr. Dr. h.c. is furious about the lack of respect shown by British Airways.
@BicepsTradern@fakehistoryhunt It is probably true that many modern artisans couldn’t match pre-industrial masters *when using only the tools and techniques used historically*, but that mostly just tells us that the necessary skills have changed. (Especially if they want to run a profitable business with it.)
@Requin_fatigue @CerberusXt The total inability of most planetary populations to defend themselves without having to rely on the Imperiumto send Guard regiments from elsewhere in the galaxy is entirely by design.
@Requin_fatigue @CerberusXt There’s also precious little time spent on the billions of civilians who live in the hive, who mostly spend their time becoming biomass offscreen. There’s nothing as expendable as a human in the Imperium of Man.
@Requin_fatigue @CerberusXt Considering how quickly you move from the execution scene to fighting enemies, those commissars set up a tribunal the second they had a 20 minute break from active combat.
@_Jyggalag_ For every claimed evil of the T’au Empire, there’s also the question of whether it was a part of their Empire’s operations before they ended up in a war against extinction by the Imperium of Man, or after.
There’s a reason the only Xenos still alive in the galaxy are dangerous.
@Statikplus@RoborosewaterM They can be face up through various effects, so I just assumed the other way was valid as well – but I realise that isn’t necessarily the case with Magic rules.
@neon_evangayion You want your adventurers to fight kobolds in a dungeon without having to make ethical decisions? Just don’t make the dungeon a kobold village! Make it the base of operations for a raiding kobold warband, and let all the non-evil and non-raiding kobolds live on somewhere else.
@neon_evangayion It’s also really easy to include bands of enemies to kill without having their entire race be evil by just treating them like Vikings or similar. Norse people aren’t inherently evil, but the ones who have shown up on a dragon ship with axes and helmets are all enemy combatants.
As a Norwegian security nerd I am probably biased, but this is a brilliant long-read by Ben Taub/@NewYorker on life and (security) challenges in the Arctic High North. A must-read with jaw dropping details on some of Russia's cross-border, sub-threshold advances.
@The_Lookout_N Honestly, it’s a wonder it took until 2012 for the bases in the North to be sold off, considering how strong the pre-2014 belief that territorial defence was a relic of the past and that the military’s main purpose was in international operations was throughout the 2000s.
@Fatdwarf2 A large number of the people playing Space Marine 2 will have been well under 10 years old when the first game came out 13 years ago.
It has been available to buy all this time, but why would someone who is not already a fan look it up on Steam or YouTube instead of a new game?
@GravityV9_8@RoborosewaterM@WillWeaverRVA Since conjure is an Alchemy-only keyword, it could possibly work *somehow* by copying an existing player’s hand, library, board, etc, but it leaves a mountain of questions about what this new virtual clone-player is supposed to do for the rest of the game.
@bmacconnell1@BitsHammer@SilentSyringa@AzarinEvil@PrimalNight @ChromeGuardsman The lore is pretty conflicting about the level of electronics and computing – and how complex it all can be before a brain must be involved to avoid the ban on thinking machines.
