An Ancient World Next Door: A Veteran Planet With Conditions for Life
Just 13 light-years from Earth, in the constellation Pictor, shines a faint red star known as Kapteyn’s Star. In 2014 astronomers announced a super-Earth around it: Kapteyn b. The world, they said, could have formed only about two billion years after the Big Bang. If the estimates held, it would be one of the oldest potentially habitable planets ever found.
The universe was still young then. Heavy elements were scarce, and the first generations of stars were only beginning to enrich space with metals. Yet around this ancient, metal-poor red subdwarf a planet of at least 4.8 Earth masses may already have been circling, completing an orbit every 48.6 days at a distance of about 0.17 astronomical units. For such a cool, dim star, that orbit sits inside the habitable zone.
Red dwarfs live for tens or even hundreds of billions of years. Kapteyn’s Star belongs to the galactic halo: old, fast-moving, and poor in metals. It is thought to have been born in a dwarf galaxy later swallowed by the Milky Way. The remnant of that galaxy is likely the cluster Omega Centauri. Any planets around the star would have survived both its birth and that violent galactic merger.
The energy Kapteyn b would receive from its star is roughly 40 percent of what Earth gets from the Sun—closer to Mars than to Earth. Without an atmosphere its equilibrium temperature would be around 205 K (−68 °C). A more massive super-Earth, however, could hold a thicker atmosphere and greenhouse gases. In that case liquid water on the surface would remain possible. Its Earth Similarity Index was estimated at about 0.67.
The discovery immediately raised a striking question: how much time would life have had to evolve on such a world? Earth needed nearly 4.5 billion years to produce a technological species. Kapteyn b would have had more than twice that span. Researchers at the time wondered aloud what kind of biosphere might arise over 11 billion years.
Later work complicated the picture. The radial-velocity signals used to claim the planets closely match the star’s own activity—its rotation and surface spots. Studies in 2015 and 2021 concluded there is no convincing evidence that Kapteyn b or its companion Kapteyn c exist. Catalogs often list the inner candidate as a false positive.
The story still matters. It showed that potentially habitable worlds could form very early, even when the universe was relatively poor in heavy elements. It also underlined how carefully weak signals around active red dwarfs must be interpreted. And it left a vivid image: almost next door, on cosmic scales, there might once have been—or might still be—an ancient planet that had an enormous stretch of time in which life could take hold.
Even if this particular candidate does not survive, the search for such veteran worlds continues. Old halo red dwarfs remain natural laboratories for a simple question: how soon after the Big Bang did conditions for life first appear?
