🐦😎 MORE THAN THE BIRD GUY | SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI 😎🐦
BONUS DROP! 🎶 (With the first "Peter's Barque Merch" - a St. Francis Hoodie! See Below)
This one is arriving a few days early.
Sunday is the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi—and 2026 is not just another Saint Francis feast.
Eight hundred years ago, on October 3, 1226, Francis died at the Portiuncula. This year the Church is observing an extraordinary YEAR OF SAINT FRANCIS, marking the 800th anniversary of his passing from this life.
Which seems like an excellent time to remember that Francis was considerably more than…
THE BIRD GUY.
You know the Francis we usually get:
Brown robe.
Birds.
Wolves.
Flowers.
Garden statue.
Basically the patron saint of your grandmother’s birdbath.
And, to be fair, Francis really DID love creation.
Brother Sun. Sister Moon. Birds and animals and the beauty of the created world.
But Francis loved creation because it pointed him toward the CREATOR.
And somewhere along the way, popular culture managed to turn one of Christianity’s most radical disciples into the nice animal guy.
This was a wealthy young man who walked away from privilege for radical poverty.
A man who had been repulsed by lepers—and then deliberately went among them, served them and embraced them.
A man who heard Christ tell him to rebuild His Church and took the assignment rather seriously.
And then, in 1219, during the Fifth Crusade, Francis crossed the battle lines at Damietta, entered the Muslim camp, stood before Sultan al-Kamil…
AND PREACHED CHRIST.
Unarmed.
Which brings me to probably my favorite quote ATTRIBUTED to Francis:
“Preach the Gospel at all times. Use words when necessary.”
It’s a fantastic line.
There’s just one small problem:
Francis probably never said it. 😂
At least, we don’t find that sentence in his writings or the earliest accounts of his life.
But the irony is that Francis absolutely LIVED the idea behind it.
His poverty preached.
His mercy preached.
His treatment of the unwanted preached.
His joy preached.
His relationship with creation preached.
AND FRANCIS ALSO USED WORDS.
A lot.
Apparently standing in front of the Sultan during a Crusade qualified as “necessary.”
That encounter also gave me one of my favorite little changes in the song.
I originally had the line:
“Preach the Prince of Peace.”
My friend Todd Sobotka suggested changing it to:
“BE AN INSTRUMENT OF PEACE.”
It’s a deliberate little callback to the Prayer of Saint Francis—and the oft-sung hymn it inspired:
“Make me a channel of your peace…”
That prayer, incidentally, isn’t actually from Francis either.
Apparently Francis has become so associated with peace that we keep giving him really good quotes and prayers he didn’t write. 😂
But the association itself makes sense.
Francis didn’t merely TALK about peace.
In the middle of a Crusade, he literally crossed the battle lines, unarmed, to encounter a Muslim ruler face-to-face and preach the Prince of Peace.
He tried to BE an instrument of peace.
So Todd’s line stayed.
And toward the end of his life, the saint we remember holding sparrows was marked by something rather more startling:
THE STIGMATA—the wounds of Christ.
That’s really the point of this song.
Don’t get rid of the birds.
KEEP THE BIRDS.
Keep the wolf.
Keep the flowers.
Keep Brother Sun and Sister Moon.
Keep the garden statues.
Francis wasn’t LESS than the bird guy.
He was MORE THAN THE BIRD GUY.
Because the hands we picture holding the sparrows ultimately bore the wounds of the Lamb.
🎶 “More Than the Bird Guy (Saint Francis of Assisi)”
The song and video drop TOMORROW—Thursday, October 1—as we head into Saint Francis’s feast and the great 800th-anniversary observances of this Jubilee year.
And if distribution goes according to plan, it should arrive on Spotify and Apple Music on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4—the actual Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi.
So consider Thursday the early Peter’s Barque premiere. 🐦😎
Sunday, the Bird Guy gets his streaming platforms.
👕🐦😎 AND FOR THE FIRST TIME… PETER’S BARQUE SWAG!
I liked the “More Than the Bird Guy” album art enough that I decided Saint Francis needed to become something else he probably never expected:
A HOODIE.
Yep. The first-ever piece of official Peter’s Barque swag is a “More Than the Bird Guy” hoodie featuring the album cover art—birds, stigmata, medieval tapestry aesthetic, ridiculous sunglasses and all.
If you’ve ever wanted to evangelize while simultaneously looking like Saint Francis just unlocked a secret achievement:
This is apparently your moment. 😂

And then, because apparently Peter’s Barque has accidentally wandered into a new musical genre, the next scheduled release is:
⚔️ “October 7, 1571” — LEPANTO ⚔️
Weirdly, the two songs have a surprisingly similar musical/historical-adventure vibe despite being made more than a month apart.
Francis first. 🐦
Lepanto next. ⚔️

🚗📖💥 “DRIVE-BY CONTRADICTIONS” — When you read an ancient library like a Reddit comment thread.
You did it!
You picked up the Bible, skimmed a few chapters, found two passages that don't immediately look the same, and discovered the fatal contradiction that somehow escaped rabbis, Church Fathers, saints, skeptics, historians, linguists, and biblical scholars for thousands of years.
Christianity had a good run.
This happens constantly with Scripture.
Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 describe Creation differently.
Acts says Saul's companions heard the voice—and later says they didn't hear it.
Matthew says Judas hanged himself. Acts says he fell and his body burst open.
Matthew and Mark arrange the fig tree and Temple episodes differently.
And these are fair questions! Christians have been asking, discussing, and writing about them for centuries.
The problem isn't noticing them.
The problem is the drive-by reading:
“I don't immediately understand how these passages fit together; therefore they contradict each other; therefore the Bible is unreliable; therefore Christianity is false.”
That's an enormous conclusion to draw from a very small amount of reading.
The Bible isn't a Reddit comment thread. It's an ancient library—73 books written across centuries, in different genres, languages, cultures, and literary conventions. Two accounts don't have to use identical words, emphasize identical details, or arrange material identically to both be true.
Sometimes you have to learn something about Greek.
Sometimes you have to understand ancient biography.
Sometimes one author supplies a detail another doesn't.
And sometimes you simply have to keep reading.
That's the joke behind “Drive-By Contradictions.”
But underneath the ska, snark, and page-two jokes, there's a serious point:
These aren't stupid questions.
Questions aren't the crime.
But ancient words deserve more
than twenty minutes of your time.
Ask difficult questions. Pull passages apart. Read the footnotes. Learn the context. Read people who disagree with you.
Just don't confuse “this looks contradictory to me” with “nobody has ever noticed this contradiction before.”
Because if your theory begins with “somehow nobody noticed...”
Maybe make it past page two. 😏
🎶 “Drive-By Contradictions” — a bright, plucky ska track for Scripture nerds, skeptics, apologists, converts, cradle Catholics, and anybody who's ever watched someone disprove 3,000 years of Jewish and Christian thought before their coffee got cold.
