In 1998, Canadian art student Deidre LaCarte created a website featuring rows of dancing hamster GIFs set to a sped-up tune. She made it to compete with her sister and a friend over who could get the most web traffic in a year- and it quickly became one of the earliest internet memes.

The catchy song is actually a sped-up version of “Whistle Stop” from Disney’s 1973 film Robin Hood.
