A special day spent at the National Portrait Gallery after its wonderful refurbishment, I particularly loved seeing their version of Holbein’s Cromwell…with the book we recently discovered on Cromwell’s desk 😍 The book itself is on display @hevercastle until 10 Nov!
In today’s Gone Medieval podcast @MattLewisAuthor tells the thrilling story of Jack Cade. How did he go from being an ordinary man to the leader of a 47,000 strong popular uprising, the spark that ignited the Wars of the Roses? https://t.co/UUBLXHOmV7
.@kateemccaffrey made the link that Catherine of Aragon & Anne Boleyn had copies of the same book. She then discovered a 3rd copy of the 1527 Book of Hours & Hever’s Curator, Alison Palmer, recognised the silver gilt binding of the book from the famous portrait of Cromwell. 2/2
“The most exciting Cromwell discovery in a generation – if not more.” - Dr @TracyBorman
This book is thought to be the only object from any Tudor portrait to survive to this day & the first time the book has been lent from Trinity College since it was received in 1660. 1/2
