NPR stands for freedom of speech & holding the powerful accountable. A vigorous, vibrant free press is essential to the health of our democracy.
My full statement on the recent inaccurate Twitter label below:
Journalism is not a crime. We stand with WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested last week on bogus espionage charges in Russia. Evan worked for three years as a reporter at The Moscow Times – we know he’s a professional journalist. He should be released immediately. 🧵👇
#NationalRadioDay is a good day to remember the vital role public radio plays in providing information we all need to fully exercise our rights in our democracy… Public radio is the most easily accessed daily news source for audiences across the country https://t.co/HzD63eHmoG
On #WorldPressFreedomDay we honor all journalists working tirelessly and risking their lives to bring us the information we need. The vital journalism public radio station newsrooms around the country do every day would be impossible without #PressFreedom

The recognition of outstanding journalism continues, as the next silver baton is awarded to @NPR, @PlanetMoney and Frontline PBS’ “Waste Land,” a powerful exposé on the plastic recycling industry. #duPont2022
This is a heartbreaking loss for all of us at NPR, our Member Stations & millions of listeners in the public radio family. Petra’s passion for her work, love for her colleagues & joy sharing books listeners have made a lasting impact. Our deepest sympathy to her family & friends.
NPR is heartbroken to report that our own books editor, Petra Mayer, died on Saturday. If you've read or listened to anything about books on NPR, you've likely encountered her work. https://t.co/EbSvs1o40B

We join our colleagues across the media in this request for humanitarian assistance for the Afghans who worked with us to help keep the public informed during 20 years of war.
NPR joined this effort to seek the U.S. Government’s
humanitarian assistance for Afghans who worked with the U.S. media as journalists, interpreters & support staff & now fear retaliation from the Taliban for having courageously associated themselves with the American press.
