This video came up in my YouTube feed, and I find it funny how many people are baffled by what’s happened to South Africa. There’s no mystery to it, guys. For most of its history it was essentially a European nation with European institutions, European laws, developed infrastructure, and a European population capable of maintaining those systems.

Then, basically overnight, political power was transferred to sub-Saharan Africans. The universities, railways, power stations and electrical grid didn’t magically disappear when that happened. But since then South Africa has undergone a process of institutional decay that looks considerably less mysterious when you compare it with the performance of other sub-Saharan African states. The only reason it hasn’t happened faster is because millions of Europeans have remained. It is a country living off the fumes of the civilization that preceded it.

How to fix South Africa? Make it European again.
