Very much appreciated the opportunity to collaborate with @EducationNC on a series of articles about the governance model used for @NCCommColleges & how it compares to those used in other states.
This two part series explores the context of higher education, the development of the current governance model in North Carolina, and a comparison of that model to those used in other states. https://t.co/vTNDGj73HA
The pandemic has been terrible in so many ways, & the creation of COVID vaccines is incredibly important. But pretending that the pandemic is over despite clear evidence to the contrary simply kills & harms more people while making a return to a real "normal" harder & harder. 6/6
I remain amazed over how many economic analysts completely ignore COVID--a highly transmissible, airborne diseases that has killed ~1.1m Americans, become the country's ~3rd leading cause of death, & has pushed down life expectancy. /1

Instead, in the conventional view, the problem isn't a deadly virus & its effects, but rather, that many workers--low-wage workers in particular--are doing too well & so need to lose their jobs or have their wages cut for their own good. /5
That was also the first time I saw close up how "economism" or "ECON 101-ism" is used to give an analytical veneer to debates that are fundamentally political ones over questions of power, distribution, & fairness & who get to decide those things. 5/5
Working on the effort to raise North Carolina's minimum wage back in 2005/06 was a formative early career experience for me. I never forget the anger that so many people with power & money had over the idea that those with so little should have any guaranteed rights. /1
For 14th consecutive year, NC General Assembly did not provide minimum-wage workers with a pay raise upon the arrival of the new year on Sunday. As a result, about 63,000 North Carolinians remain stuck at the federally mandated $7.25 an hour set in 2009,

Jump ahead 15 or so years (depending on how you count), & the minimum wage is exactly the same, both in NC & federally. Yet the red-hot anger over the very existence of the minimum wage remains, as demonstrated by many policymakers in this article. /4
Hey, @ChapelHillPD... perhaps you could instruct your officers NOT to blindly turn through a crosswalk with pedestrians in it while the officer clearly is talking on his cellphone? If you don't respect pedestrian safety, why should any motorist?
@CBJspanberg@CBJnewsroom Thanks so much for the kind note, Erik. I always appreciate the opportunity to speak with your and your colleagues at the Business Journal!
