Edmonton City Council sold us a lie: they claimed we had a "housing shortage" and pressured mature neighbourhoods to make way for so-called "affordable rentals" at 400 sq ft units renting for $3,000 a month.

Predictably, they’re not renting. Instead, these units are being flipped into Airbnbs, boarding houses, and hourly rentals.

The next chapter is already playing out in Vancouver, where the government is stepping in to buy these units to bail out developers. I’ll hold off on the following step for now, since it hasn’t been officially announced yet. But if you were paying attention during my campaign, you’ll remember I warned about this exact scenario years ago.

We don’t have a housing shortage. We have an affordability crisis and this approach will not solve it.

I’ve been in Niagara Falls, NY for 2 days and here are my thoughts:

1. Every entry level job is filled by an American - young and old, black and white.
2. Young college aged men are cashiers and servers.
3. Older white men are security guards.

In Canada the bulk of our service and low level jobs are filled by foreign workers and foreign students. I rarely see security guards who are not recent immigrants/TFWs

When you see things the way they used to be the difference is stunning.

They have no problem filling their jobs with Americans, and tons of serving/cashier jobs are young people.

I’ve seen several RSM’s encouraged to call it a day before the usual 2-3 year appointment after being promoted one rank beyond their capability despite a couple of decades of honourable service & was at the incident in Kosovo that got the CO of 1VP relieved but I think having both the CO & RSM relieved of command at the same time is regimental history being made.

I’m pretty reliable told the incident happened when a sub unit of 3VP along with the CO & RSM got on a DND bus being driven by an MSE OP (transportation trade) who was a Cpl.

As the troops were loading the driver noticed that a couple of cases of beer were making their way onto the bus. He informed them that drinking was not allowed on the bus & that they’d have to wait until they arrived at their unit lines. At this point there are different versions of the story circulating. Some say, the rifle company commander agreed & told the troops to follow the rules until the CO & RSM overruled him & cracked a couple of beers which was enough for the troops to follow their lead. Other accounts say the CO & RSM told the bus driver to take it easy & told the troops to crack open the beers & then joined them in drinking.

The story comes back together with everyone agreeing that the CO & RSM were drinking alongside the troops & ignored the regulation against drinking on a DND bus. The driver, likely to prevent himself from getting into trouble, took a photo of the CO & RSM drinking & reported the incident to his supervisor after he dropped the 3VP troops off. His supervisor escalated the incident & eventually it made its way to the Brigade & Division Commanders.

It’s unclear who made the decision to relieve the CO & RSM just a few days before they were scheduled to formally turn 3VP over to a new Command Team.

So that’s the story as I’ve been told it happened.

Time will tell if my sources got it right, but one thing it demonstrates to me is that the Army is terrified of leaks to traditional, independent & SM about misdeeds or bad decisions that 2 decades ago would have quietly put careers on a very long pause or end them.

Now, the Army wants to be seen as being proactive so they overreact & publicly humiliate two senior leaders who have given their regiment, the Army, the CAF & Canada everything for decades. It definitely sends an internal message, sadly I don’t think it’s the message they hope it is.
