In November 2022, Waikato GP Dr David Smylie received a dinner invitation from a sales rep that opened “Ate Marie Everyone”. Late that night, he fired back a four-sentence private reply, joking about the typo and grumbling about the amount of te reo in her email. You might not agree with what Dr Smylie said, but it wasn’t sent to a colleague or a patient.

Her manager complained to the Medical Council. Within days, Dr Smylie had written an apology. The Council never passed it on, at one point claiming it would “interfere with an active investigation”. When the rep was later interviewed and the committee chair floated a meeting with him, another member warned her off: “it’s tough calling out racism.”

The Professional Conduct Committee found his comments “objectively racist, offensive, and insensitive”. Whether he meant any harm was “of little consequence”. His four sentences had “the potential to contribute to current health inequities”.

The penalty was a year of what the Council called an “Educational Programme”: monthly sessions with a supervisor who reported back on him, readings on colonisation and institutional racism, and strategies for managing his “implicit biases (which are inevitable)”. He was expected to pay for it, at $125 an hour plus GST. To finish, he had to write two essays, including 1,000 words on structural racism in New Zealand health care.
In almost 40 years of practice, nobody had complained about his care. The committee’s ruling noted he had “not yet” received a complaint.

He sat through all twelve sessions and refused to write the essays, on a matter of principle. Dr Smylie now practises overseas.

Health NZ is short of doctors and recruiting from abroad. The Medical Council has driven one out over a private email.

Education Review Office warns Christian Principal for questioning the labelling of conservative students as extremists, and for supporting the Government's proposed changes to Treaty obligations in education.

The Principal of Manukau Christian School has written about an experience he had with the Education Review Office during its review of the school. During the review process, he received a phone call from someone at ERO raising concerns about two articles he'd written, one questioning the labelling of conservative students as extremists, and the other supporting the Government's proposed changes to Treaty obligations in education. He was warned that he could be putting his professional registration at risk if someone complained to the Teaching Council. The experience raised some serious concerns for him about viewpoint discrimination and the freedom of conservative Christian educators to express their views publicly without fear of professional consequences.

In Downing Street yesterday, Andy Burnham and Angela Rayner met Muslim community leaders around the Cabinet table.

The Prime Minister used the opportunity to take a cheap pot-shot at his political rivals, accusing them of using “unacceptable language” about Islam.

This isn’t the first time Labour politicians have accused their rivals of being “Islamophobic” or sought to police speech about Islam.

Another revelation from the meeting is that Angela Rayner is reportedly set to announce the appointment of an “anti-Muslim hostility” tsar this week.

Rayner appointed five people to a working group tasked with drafting the definition. All had troubling links to Islamist organisations, including the Muslim Council of Britain and MEND.

The Communities Department, which Rayner leads, also said it had deleted all responses to the working group’s consultation — responses that were vital to drafting the definition.

After pressure from Nick Timothy and the threat of legal action from the Free Speech Union, the ministry announced that it did have the responses after all, but would not show them to us.

This has only fuelled speculation that the Government allowed extremists to influence what is now Britain’s de facto Islamic blasphemy law.

🚨 NEW: Ofcom says all adults should have to use their ID to access social media.

• Ofcom has recommended four methods for verifying users’ ages ahead of the UK’s ban on social media for under-16s, which is due to come into force in March next year.

• The four methods suggested, subject to government approval, are photo ID matching, banking-based checks, live facial age estimation and digital ID.

• The regulator noted that verifying the ages of 16 and 17-year-olds is challenging because many do not have credit cards, full driving licences or passports.

• Ofcom chief executive Dame Melanie Dawes said the ban can work if firms carry out highly effective age checks, and that the regulator will take action against companies that fail to comply.

There’s an almost sadistic aspect to what the Medical Council has done here. It’s not just censure, but a kind of ritual humiliation — making the transgressor kiss the rod and beg for his career and write contrite essays like a little schoolboy.

This is a key observation which the political "left" fail to grasp. The culture & beliefs they have pushed for the last 10-15 years has undermined public trust in science and academia more broadly. The rest of the populace recognise this & reject politicians pushing that.
