I was on a crowded bus when a woman asked if I could give her my seat.
“I’m sorry, I’ve been standing for almost an hour.”
I looked at her.
She didn’t look pregnant or elderly.
Honestly, I was tired too.
But I stood up.
“Here, take it.”
She smiled.
“Thank you.”
She sat down and immediately started crying.
I became uncomfortable.
“Are you okay?”
She wiped her face.
“Yes. I’m sorry.”
Then she looked at the small envelope in her hand.
“I’ve been trying to get enough courage to do something all morning.”
I assumed it was a family problem.
I didn’t ask.
A few stops later, she stood up.
Before getting off, she handed me the envelope.
“Please don’t open it until I leave.”
Then she walked away.
