Finding the Embers: Johnny Burtka's Last ISI Lecture
ISI's mission is to nurture the next generation of students and leaders by connecting them to the great tradition of Western and American thought — from Jerusalem, Athens, and Rome to London and Philadelphia. In this speech, @johnnyburtka reflects on what it truly means to be called to greatness, and why the answer may surprise you.
(0:00) The embers of Western civilization
(2:06) ISI’s “fire keepers” on campus
(4:09) Are we really called to greatness?
(6:28) Washington & Lincoln on humility
I’m debating @robbysoave at @ISI today, on the proposition:
This house believes the oligarchy has destroyed American democracy.
I will be taking the affirmative position.
@LeahLibresco moderates
This is a video debate, to be released later.
Stephen Smith is dean of humanities and chair of English here at the College. More importantly, he is a good man.
Steve has published a book with our friends at @WordOnFire about what Thomas More—the statesman, martyr, and saint—can teach us about living a good life and facing death.
These questions are worthy. So is the book.
I hope you will read it. A link is below.

My involvement with @ISI began with @johnnyburtka whose dynamic presidency brought fresh air into a venerable institution. At a time of great generational and political renewal, I’ll forever be grateful for his leadership, always kindling the fire of Christian civilization.
I’ve met countless talented young journalists who chose to leave journalism for careers that once seemed more stable, like tech, finance, law. But now, AI is rapidly reshaping many of those entry-level professions, too.
I’m in USA Today making the case that young journalists (especially conservatives) should give journalism another look, particularly if they’re committed to the kind of shoe-leather reporting AI can’t replicate. (NB:I didn’t write the headline.)

“The deeper measure of Johnny's tenure is that, under his leadership, ISI has remained what it has always been: a civilizational organization, deeply imbued with the spirit of liberal learning.”
—@ISI Chairman, Mark Henrie
