I want to clear up something. I'm hearing a lot about how the #STLCards don't have starters who can go 6+ innings. Relative to the rest of the National League, this would be incorrect.
MOST STARTS OF 6+ IP, NL TEAMS
(Through Aug. 20)
1-Dodgers, 74
2-Phillies, 59
3-Dbacks, 54
4-CARDINALS, 51
5-Marlins, 50
6-Braves, 49
7-Giants, 49
8-Reds, 48
9-Brewers, 45
10-Pirates, 44
t-10 Cubs, 44
12-Mets, 41
13-Nationals, 35
14-Padres, 32
15-Rockies, 25
This is why St. Louis is tied for 10th in the majors this season -- and tied for 4th in the NL -- for most quality starts (47). Have to go at least 6 innings to have a chance for a quality start.
Apologies, but I didn't have time this morning to look at American League teams...
Thank you.
This is why a salary cap (and floor) doesn't make sense for MLB.
1 top-10 payroll team on this list.
5 bottom-10 payroll teams, plus teams 16, 17, and 19.
And why would they WANT to be?! Pay up when it makes sense, and don't when it doesn't.
Ichiro singled to begin the third MLB game of his career in 2001, raising his average to .300 (3-10 AB).
His average never dipped below .300 again. Ever. ๐
