A lasting peace is impossible as long as the Russian dictator remains in power.

This was stated in an interview with Ukrinform by former Commander of the Canadian Joint Operations Command, Christopher Coates.

“The first prerequisite for a lasting peace in Ukraine is Putin’s death. Unfortunately, I find it very difficult to imagine a durable peace while Putin remains in power. The only more fundamental basis for such a peace would be a military victory for Ukraine,” Coates said.

He emphasized that he is “increasingly skeptical of the idea that territorial concessions can deliver anything lasting.”

“At best, they may provide a temporary pause. If Russia retains its imperial ambitions, it will rebuild its strength and return to war,” the lieutenant general noted.

“That is why Ukraine’s strikes on Russian oil infrastructure are strategically important. They force Russia to spread its resources more thinly, reduce its revenues, and remind Russians that war comes at a cost,” Coates stressed.

According to him, Russia’s main vulnerability lies in the fact that it is waging an illegitimate war. This may sound abstract, but from a strategic standpoint it is extremely important. Russia is not fighting for its own survival. It chose this war itself and is spending enormous resources for very limited results.

Coates noted that the Kremlin is still capable of mobilizing support through propaganda and control of the media, but such mechanisms have limits. A system built on lies eventually begins to collapse from within. Sustaining a long war of choice becomes increasingly difficult, especially as human and economic losses accumulate.

“Right now, in my view, the initiative is shifting to some extent in Ukraine’s favor. Russia increasingly resembles a state that is losing strength and looking for new ways to apply pressure. We are seeing attempts at what military professionals call ‘horizontal escalation’—expanding pressure beyond the immediate battlefield because achieving success in Ukraine is becoming more difficult,” Coates said.

He added that this is a positive sign for Ukraine, but the balance remains very fragile. Ukraine has gained technological and moral advantages, yet it has not reached an operational position that would make these changes irreversible. Several major Russian mistakes could significantly alter the situation, but Russia itself continues to adapt.
