I'm a mom of teenagers and my husband has been investing in properties like the below, which we all help fix up. These houses are not in cool parts of town, but perfectly safe family neighborhoods.
I repeatedly tell my kids that homes like this are really cute, great ways to build wealth and start early adulthood. "You might need to share bills with a roommate or partner, but it will be great," I say.
Parents need to take part in settinging expectations and shaping visions for young adulthood if we are going to stem bad financial habits, spoiled attitudes and low birth rates.
Family estrangement often brings relief at first because people don't walk away from relationships hoping to be unhappy.
But research shows that for many people, the relief doesn't last. Over time, family estrangement is associated with higher rates of depression, poorer physical health, and chronic unhappiness.
We're wired for connection with our kin. When those bonds break, something deep within us recognizes that the relationship isn't as it should be.
Not every family conflict can be repaired. Not every relationship is safe. But before accepting permanent distance as the only answer, it's worth asking whether reconciliation is still possible.
@KyleMatovcik Single people don't need a home this big. If they do buy it, get a roommate. Or a couple can buy it together. This is not hard unless someone feels entitled to 2,000 square feet per person.
This debate about whether seniors should pay property taxes is bananas. Just make it a sliding scale based on income/wealth and home value. There are plenty of programs that excuse low-income seniors from property taxes. Study what works and scale.
Some of you will want my head for saying this…
If you spend 40+ years working a 9-5, paying taxes, and having kids, you should be left alone.
Yes, you deserve to pay zero income taxes and property taxes the rest of your life.
Pay attention to who is against this.
"Maybe if we had mandatory civil service we'd have a more civil society. Everyone I know who was in the military can get along with people different from them and has generally moderate politics."

This is a really good feminist takedown of Belle Burden and Strangers. However, it misses the bigger feminist points which are:
1. Burden alleges her ex refuses to co-parent and abandoned his children, which is the biggest human offense, and a gendered one. Unequal caretaking is today the only thing standing in the way of gender gaps.
2. The division of assets is less of a feminist breach than the child support order ($600K annually, fwiw).
Having covered divorce for 15 years my spidey hunch is that Burden likely fought for majority time with the kids and perhaps turned them away from their dad. The majority parenting time nets her more child support.
3. In 2026 alimony is almost exclusively ordered in affluent families, yet has no place in a feminist world. You chose to abandon your career — no matter the salary — there are adult consequences as @MegKeene says:
"It’s an argument that I’ve started to here somewhat frequently, that’s passed off as women’s empowerment, or even feminism:
The argument goes: Because the deck is stacked against women, and the nature of the world is unfair, we’re not always responsible for our own decisions. We’re being manipulated by men, and it’s not our fault.
I find this offensive. Women are people, with brains and agency. My feminist fight is to make sure that I’m seen that way—a bright, talented, and experienced woman, who’s every bit as capable as the men around me. I don’t want my behavior to be excused, quite the opposite. I want what I say to be taken seriously."
This story involves money, marriage, lies, and betrayal. You knew I was going to weigh in.
I think we are giving Burden a pass because: she’s a woman, her ex was awful, and people attached their own meaning to her.
But she lied and is now playing dumb.

@Mr_Husky1 Women have always worked for economic benefit of children and suggesting otherwise is daft. https://t.co/wgxWOg3ez0
Agree about breastfeeding, gadgets and hand0me-downs
@AraucariaArauc1@benryanwriter Except that medical interventions are to be evidence based, and the evidence does not exist. Also, patients are not routinely informed about side effects, which the most recent research finds include heightened suicidality.
