For many people, Somalia is synonymous with war, insecurity and political instability, rather than a destination for business. Yet despite challenges in parts of the region, local commercial activity continues across a variety of sectors, ranging from renewable energy and water bottling to apartment construction and poultry production.
@JonBellish is the executive director of @Shuraako, a firm that provides financing to Somali companies. How we made it in Africa editor-in-chief Jaco Maritz spoke to Bellish about the operating environment and some of the region’s untapped business opportunities.

Consumer goods have gotten cheaper, but housing, healthcare, education, and childcare have gotten a lot more expensive. Intergenerational mobility has declined, and two incomes are now required.
Living abroad is annoying. @Chase will let me send money to my US dollar account in Kenya for $15, but it won’t let me send the same amount of money to the same bank in a shilling account for a $5 fee. They say it’s for compliance reasons, but I think it’s for fee reasons.
Hahaha I just relented and went to transfer to the dollar account. The fee is now $40, and it has a helpful tip that I should try to send foreign currency to lower the fee.
