#AI in education is a hot topic and so today's Digest looks at what parents need to know about how #ArtificialIntelligence is being used in schools.
Including advice from @JonDigest about how parents can use the technology to support children.

@TwinklSLT@JenSwift15 Thanks for having me! It's been great to chat about this topic - I'm really excited about AI and teaching and it's been lovely talking about it with you.
@TwinklSLT@JonDigest (Jumping in at the end - hi 👋🏻)
I enjoyed researching this #TADigest before Christmas on 9 ways AI can help (not replace!) teaching assistants in the classroom
There’s great potential for AI to empower TAs if training is given and resources allow!

@TwinklSLT I’m really excited about our growing number of AI tools and how we’re finding new ways to use AI to help those who teach https://t.co/CVAuR3zk30
@TwinklSLT What I don't think it will ever do is replace teachers. Education relies on the human connection and the relationship between students and their teacher. AI is a tool that can help save time and help with learning, but nothing compares to an expert educator. #TheLeadersTeam
@TwinklSLT Engaging in CPD can also help - we're working on some CPD for teachers and school leaders at the moment to help them get the most out of AI, and there are some great Twinkl Digest articles on getting the most out of AI as well.
@TwinklSLT Other than that, talk to other teachers who've tried it (or engage online) and see what they've found that works. Teaching is a great community (when we're not all racing for the last remaining biscuit in the staffroom!) and we can learn from each other.
@TwinklSLT It's also important to make sure protected personal data isn't fed into an AI model, and make sure staff are aware of potential biases that might come out of the model. Giving guidance to staff through a school AI policy might help. #TheLeadersTeam
@TwinklSLT Another challenge is that AI can make mistakes! These can be factual mistakes (especially for lesser-known topics) but it might also lack the pedagogy of human-created content. It's why a teacher should check the content before using it.
@andrew_cowley23@TwinklSLT I think across education from primary up we're going to need to start teaching pupils about AI in the way we teach the internet - how can you use it to help you learn, how to keep yourself safe, what are the risks, what counts as plagiarism, etc.
@andrew_cowley23@TwinklSLT Absolutely! Teaching needs that human connection and an expert teacher. AI can help, but like any resource or tool, it needs an expert practitioner to work it well.
@TwinklSLT One thing I'm excited by is the role AI can play in boosting child engagement - by allowing children to 'talk' to a historical figure, creating reading comprehensions specific to their needs or even crafting a tailored learning journey. #TheLeadersTeam
@TwinklSLT AI can absolutely play a role in providing high-quality, but it needs engaged & expert teachers/SLT! It can give ideas and can save time on admin, giving teachers more time for high-quality teaching, but like anything it needs a teacher giving good info and checking the outcome
