$30 burgers, $50 bags of coffee, $100 steaks. But have you heard of To’ak Chocolate’s Enriquestuardo bar which costs $490.
That’s $490 for a single 1.76oz bar of chocolate. Another🧵on the world’s most expensive chocolate.
Here’s today’s coffee c market chart. In all my years in coffee, Ive never seen anything like these hourly swings. Issue is Brazil tariffs only reduce from 50 to 40%. Roasters still won’t buy those. Plus Brazil is selling beans to china, keeping supply low @herbgreenberg
Coffee prices have skyrocketed since last year, partly due to tariffs. Easing them now of course helps. But Brazil has been selling beans US roasters haven’t been able to afford to buy bc of tariffs to china and other countries. So there will still be tight supply
@herbgreenberg Others prices also ⬆️. Our chocolate vendor has raised prices 3x this year bc of tariffs. Equipment prices have soared. A customer building out a cafe is paying at least an extra $10k bc of tariffs.
@herbgreenberg We don’t buy/commit to coffee every week, but our costs have never had such a wide spread. C market coffees r marked up based on quality, and marked up even more for tariffs. Roasters and cafes are raising prices, shrinking bags (more)

@mlevchin Have you tried altering your recipe? Lower yield and/or shorter time. I haven’t had those issues tho if I’m using a more chocolate forward espresso at home, I’ll keep my paddle on a lower flow rate
Virtually *all* federal employees hired in past 1-2 years have apparently been (or will be shortly) fired. This alarming move will severely & immediately compromise public safety, from disruption of severe weather warnings to pandemic prevention to nuclear incident response.
@davidhenkes Labor shortages during Covid ⬆️ wages. Supply chain shortages ⬆️ cogs (ingredients, paper goods etc). Costs of equipment & replacement parts skyrocketed and prices have not come down. Some restaurants price gouged. Many others can’t raise prices enough to offset these costs
Coffee C market prices hit levels today unseen since 1997 (See 1 day and 1 year charts). This will certainly lead to higher prices for beans at markets and drinks at cafes @herbgreenberg
@drgurner There is a massive difference between cheap and expensive coffee. The problem is many roasters masquerade as quality and charge a lot of money for low quality and/or poorly roasted beans

@davidhenkes Some of our baristas do, but mainly bc
1) shifts aren’t 8 hours and 2) they are in school so their availability doesn’t always match our needs which leads them to work at another location on open days
2) Oil prices.
World wide tensions have led to lower oil production and increased prices. This not only impacts beans transport, but fertilizer as well.
