I was sitting in my college dorm room that day on 9/11. I was finishing a bowl of cereal, Apple Jacks. I was watching the new as I usually did. I picked up my LL Bean orange book-bag, put on my Adi-Slides and was walking out of my room.

I always left the TV on, I don't know why... I just always did. I will never forget those words:

"This just in, we have unconfirmed reports this morning that a plane has crashed into one of the World Trade Centers."

I don't know why, but it caught me. I turned around, walked back in, and sat there watching. I sat down after the two reporters said what was going on. I was watching for maybe 5 minutes when the person reporting live on the feed screamed "Oh my God" when the 2nd plane crashed into the other tower. My heart raced, my head went into my hands.

I must have sat there for 1.5 hours. Maybe more. When the towers collapsed, I remember getting nauseous. I tried to comprehend the scale of what had just happened. Witnessing people throwing themselves to their death instead of burning alive. Watching the 2nd plane hit LIVE on TV. Knowing the death toll was likely in the thousands.

I left my dorm room after the 2nd tower collapsed. People were weeping in the common area outside my suite where I lived with several soccer teammates. I will never forget one of the girls on the Lacrosse team from the Long Island area screaming that her Father and Uncle were "NYC firemen" and that they could be dead.

I know of no greater tragedy and cowardly act in my life. It was an act that defined my generation perhaps. I prayed no generation ever faced the weight of an act like that again.

The only time I ever felt that way again... October 7th 2023.

God help us all.
