🗣️ "This reliance on a small pool of wealthy donors leaves parties vulnerable to foreign interference, undue influence, and the unchecked power of special interests."
@jonnarcross in @labourlist on Elon Musk and why our donation laws need urgent reform.

Amazing how reactionary and *not based on the evidence* so many views on the four day week are from those within government.
✅ Good for productivity
✅ Good for workers
✅ Saves money
UK Power Networks is registered for tax in Hong Kong, where it stashes its £300m+ annual profits for maximum tax advantage.
They won't be coming back to Margate to fix anything because they don't have to do so.
There's a reason they call us Treasure Island.
If the government really want to fix the NHS and public services, here are some ways to fund it:
➡️ Tax fortunes over £10m at 2% (£24bn a year)
➡️ Tax income from wealth the same as income from work (£24.2bn/yr)
➡️ Close inheritance tax loopholes (£1.4bn/yr)
@alastairis @jwsal On council development (i.e the ones the council has maximum control of) it's better - funding is the issue but completely agree more council housing is best.
75% of the new council housing development programme will be social rent: https://t.co/FbcG0u7PUC
Crazy stat in UK Housing Review: govt spending on housing is at its highest: £30.5 billion in 2021/22 compared to £22.3 billion in 1975/76, in real terms. In the 70s, 95% was on housebuilding, now it's only 12%. The main reason for this drop? A rise in demand for housing benefit.
@jwsal @alastairis 7 of 11 are social rent now. I think they managed to get an extra one that was going to be for private sale from the original proposals.
@alastairis @jwsal There are also council schemes where additional funding has become available and the end result has been a better social mix than originally planned.
I think Chowdhury Walk is an example of this where it ended up better than planned.
@alastairis @jwsal This can (and does) also work the other way with "clawback clauses" in planning consent for private development.
If their profit margin increases over the development so can their social housing contributions.
Suspending right to buy should be a day one priority for any Labour government.
It’s a policy that has decimated social housing stock and transferred affordable homes into the hands of buy-to-let landlords who jack up rents with the state often picking up the bill.
Reducing the right-to-buy discounts is an important first step in ending a policy that has decimated council housing across the country.
Social housing must be at the centre of Labour's housing plans.
The government is acting to protect our social housing stock and build more affordable homes.
This weekend we've announced:
✅A £500m top-up to the Affordable Homes Programme.
✅A reduction of Right to Buy discounts.
✅Allowing councils to retain 100% of Right to Buy receipts.
Your income from work won't be taxed more.
Your income from capital will.
It's a shift in favour of labour.
Why ever would a Labour government do that?
Remember that we decided to destroy the world's most extensive tram network for the benefit of rich private car owners.
One of the most socially and environmentally ruinous decisions this country has made since the advent of the industrial revolution.
The Tories claimed a minimum wage would cause mass unemployment — it didn’t.
They demonised trade unions, but unions are the combined power of millions of working people.
I support the Employment Rights Bill and urge us to scrap every anti-union law since Thatcher’s government.
Brilliant piece of work by @TheSentry_Org's Atlas Project shining a light on the financial affairs of Azerbaijan's Aliyev family.

The pressure on the super-rich to pay their fair share is growing.
Good to MPs from across parliament coming together to support a wealth tax.

Il Bacio is dead, long live Il Bacio!
Hoping it’s the same owners and at least one of the two continues to do the same great pizza. Very confusing though.
The people on site just informed me that Ill Bacio Express in Church Street is going to reopen as….. Ill Bacio Stokey! Same restaurant pretty much, just a slightly different name. Ill Bacio Express is reopening in Newington Green next to No. 60 Brasserie.
NEW: Conservative MP Sir Christopher Chope says Kemi Badenoch is “preoccupied with her children” and “you can't spend all your time with your family at the same time as being leader of the opposition”.
