Creators of the World #004 - Jorge Landero 🇧🇿

Jorge Landero's paintings capture the beauty and biodiversity that define Belize. So inspired by his hometown in the Cayo District, he studied to be an artist from an early age to share the wonders of his home with the world.

It's plain to see why Landero is an icon in the Belizean art world. His bright images evoke a sense of joy, simulating a walk through the unexplored rainforests of Belize. I enjoy the many birds he paints. I'm scared of birds but I imagine these ones would be worth the encounter.

Creators of the World #003— Guatemala 🇬🇹

"I proclaimed myself a Mayan prince, in the middle of Paris-" — Luis Cardoza y Aragón, on Carlos Mérida

Mérida trained in Europe with Guatemalan style. From Indigenismo to geometric mural, his home helped define the artist he became.

Mérida is inspirational because he experimented to find his style. He exemplified that creativity is developed, not inherent. He fused Mayan style with European modernism to create...geometric abstraction?! His is a journey rooted in his homeland and defined by self-discovery.

Frida Kahlo is the self-portrait of Mexico. Her surreal paintings explore identity, gender, chronic pain, and what it means to be Mexican.

I love Kahlo's paintings because they are both realistic, and personal. The fantastical and bizarre elements of her paintings make me feel grounded. The weirdness makes it more true to me. Like I can understand her in part, despite the fact that our experiences are so different.

Creators of the World #001 — Canada 🇨🇦

Colville's work celebrates the mundane. Through his imaginative and geometric painting, he creates scenes of admiration for the real world.

To me, Colville's paintings look like stills from a video game. What an appropriate connection given video games are a way to participate in someone else's imagination. Colville understood that the real world has plenty enough to capture our interest. We need only to imagine.

This project came to me in an indirect way. Many years ago, I developed an obsession with flags, especially country flags. I decided to use this fascination as a creative outlet by drawing each of the flags of the world by hand. Just with pencil, markers, and index cards.

Recently I realized I wanted to share these little art projects. To post each one with an interesting fact about that country. Maybe their national food, a local custom? However these are things that are easily google-able. I wanted to celebrate these places in a different way.
