1/10 The anomaly of Combloux 🧵 129 Grand Tour time trials going back to 2000. One refuses to fit: Jonas Vingegaard, stage 16 of the 2023 Tour. By almost every measure I can build, it's the most extreme ITT of the century. Here's why.
This doesn't mean America is rich.
It means that you have to spend for things that other people get for free.
Many European countries have higher median wealth, meaning they don't have to live paycheck to paycheck like you guys have to do to survive.

1/ The 2025 TdF finished on the Champs-Elysees, as it had for decades. This time the organisers added the Cote de Montmartre, climbed three times. WvA dropped Pogacar, and won alone. The Tour used Montmartre again in 2026. A thread on what has happened to sprinters in the GTs.

@VeloFute 13/ Sprinters still have flat roads to race on. They lose those stages to late climbs, third-week fatigue, and to classics riders. The dependable bunch sprint of the 2010s has faded, and the 2025 and 2026 finishes on the Montmartre are the clearest sign of it.

@VeloFute 12/ When a genuine flat stage breaks up, classics riders win most of them: 52 percent go to riders such as WvA, MvdP and Pedersen. Fatigue adds to the effect. A flat stage in the first week finishes in a bunch sprint 83 percent of the time, and by the third week only 64 percent.
