In a world torn by rage and anxiety, one of the greatest gifts followers of Jesus are called to offer is simple, non-anxious (i.e. calm) presence.
Not a presence removed from this reality, but a presence that refuses to be shaped by it.
The irreligious don't repent at all and the religious only repent of sins. But Christians who understand the gospel also repent of their self-righteousness, of trusting in their goodness and moral efforts.

A Christianity that believes it needs political power, a president, legislation, and a nation to ensure its survival is a Christianity that actually dethrones Jesus as the actual savior of the nations and advances a belief that even Jesus needs a nation to be his savior.

- Henri Nouwen
