@radioriley@DanNeidle In fact you have an incentive to upsize. It depends on the detail, any caps, limits etc. but on face of it, you could sell those £1m in assets, sell your current home and buy a house that is £1 million more and then never pay any IHT
@Peston Depends on the detail, but on the face of it , you could sell all your other assets and buy an enormous family home. Eg say you have a £700k house and £1 million in savings and shares. So you just upsize to a £1.7 million house and pay no IHT.
@Lord_Sugar I don’t think Brexit has been a success. We’ve lost money because of it. But don’t overestimate how much impact it has had. The rest of Europe is also stuck in economic doldrums. The strapline I’d give to Brexit is “making everything a little bit worse”.
@PrfChrisPainter If a political party cannot tell me how they are going to substantially grow the economy then I am not interested. They are a waste of space and deserve no support.
@PrfChrisPainter Well that may be so. I’d prefer not to need to do this either. But if nobody knows what the solution is, why isn’t somebody at least doing more work on it? Cos if you can’t solve this, you will never have the money to invest into public services
🚨 This is the statistic Britain should be talking about 👏 @dsmitheconomics
Real GDP per head has risen just 9% in 18 years.
In the previous 18 years, it rose 43%.
Brexit did not cause the whole of Britain’s growth problem 👉 the financial crisis came first. But we responded with damaging austerity and then chose to erect new barriers with our largest neighbouring market precisely when our economy could least afford another structural shock.
Now we are paying the price for years of weak investment, weak productivity and strategic complacency.
You don’t fix a growth crisis with austerity and by making trade harder.
@PrfChrisPainter Though they also believe there needs to be an increase in access to capital markets for entrepreneurs using pension fund money, and more devolution to regional bodies with ability to lend to small businesses in the English regions, Scotland, wales and NI.
@PrfChrisPainter The economic consensus appears to be more in line with Kemi’s proposal, eg reduce tax on businesses, deregulate, take activities out of public sector etc. But most European govts do not believe they can be re-elected if they do this, so are not proposing it.
@PrfChrisPainter We do have a problem with the economy which at the moment Labour has no solution to. The conference didn’t do it for me, cos they are largely ignoring the economy. Without growth we can’t do anything to improve public services
@campbellclaret I’m assuming main reason they want Russia to win is to restore cheap energy to Germany, which is a bigger problem to them than UK given they have more manufacturing industry. But this is short-sighted and wrong.
@paullewismoney I agree it’s boring and not particularly scenic. And then you’ve got fantastically beautiful places down the road in France like Èze or St-Jean Cap Ferrat, Beaulieu-Sur-Mer or If you want a bigger place then Nice itself.
@Lord_Sugar I don’t feel I was mislead because I knew they were talking a load of rubbish. So I voted to remain. But others may well have been mislead. I see no benefit being outside EU. BUT we should be cautious of idea that rejoining EU is a panacea for all our problems.
@lancelachlan@GrahamBridge3@100glitterstars You are losing something. Burnham also mentioned something about longer review periods. So my understanding is the pension can fall behind inflation for a period until it gets updated and the govt saves money during that period by underpaying you.
@tomhfh But also from what he said it’s not going to be updated as often. So you’ll get periods where it falls behind inflation before it is brought back up at the next review, so the govt saves money during those periods
@TimesRadio@ayeshahazarika There seems to be a level of naivety here as if Starmer and Reeves enjoyed not being able to invest or deliver for people and a simple change of priorities by the leadership can transform everything. The reality is the money was not there and Burnham can’t magic it up.
@PrfChrisPainter And mostly it has nothing to do with him. No credit to Trump. But U.K./ Europe have a lot to learn from America given our current economic woes
@PrfChrisPainter Not really. I’m no Trump supporter, but it has to be said the US economy and the military are much stronger than in Europe, and they are leading the tech revolution. I’d rather be working in America than the UK at the moment. Whether it’s “stronger than ever before” I’m not sure
